I like your boat. Benford is in my neck of the woods.

You are a tourist first and cruiser second. Don't worry, I won't tell anyone.

OK, as long as you don't have more guns on board than anyone else.

Ah... With all doo respect "turista" is a physical ailment most frequently endured by new visitors to Mexico until they acclimate...

Don't need a Map.

I've been up route 50 many times through Cambridge and Easton. Even had to wait in line to get back across the northern bay bridge on summer vacations back in the days before most cars had AC. Folks would get out and sit on the grass beside the highway

I've even read the book Chesapeake by Michener a time or too. (btw, there's quite a bit of sailing in that book as there is in his book Hawaii)

Maryland was a union state back in the day which makes them the North. Plus they are in the east.

We were taught that in elementary school in Good Ole Virginia back in the early 60's.

New Hampshire is in the North East. Maryland is in the Mid-Atlantic.

Hah! From where I sit, Maryland and New Hampshire are both in the northeast. Bermuda is in the mid-atlantic.

I once had a slice of Key Lime Pie that the menu described as "a delicacy favored by our friends in the far north." Made me chuckle a bit. Of course, this was at a restaurant in Maho, Sint Maarten. Might've been the Moulin **, can't remember for sure.

Perspective is everything.

That key lime pie was really good.

Just an FYI, Insurance companies see a distinction and rates are significantly different if you call yourself cruiser, racer or live aboard.

In many places, you can walk from Virginia to Maryland.

I think you should consult a map anyway.

You're to far south to know better, but Maryland is definitely considered the North by folks in this area.

And if you look at that map you are so fond of you'll see it's towards the eastern part of the US. It even has it's own part of Assateague Island!

Re: Cruisers Vs Sailors

The mane of the thread does not make sense.

There is not necessarily an opposition between cruisers and sailors like the title imply. The title should be cruisers and sailors... and if that was so this thread would long gone.

That is pretty simple: There are sailors that are not cruisers, there are sailors that are also cruisers, there are cruisers that are not sailors.

I was born and raised in MD and lived, worked and boated there until age 63. I know very well where it is. True, it is north of Virginia but it's not "in the north".

North Carolina is considered "north" by folks in South Carolina.

Maryland is not in the "north east" by any stretch of the imagination. Again, it's "Mid Atlantic".

During the Lake Ontario 300, anchoring is sometimes the best race strategy.

Especially when approaching the Niagara mark with up to 3 knots of current against and the sails go limp.

Many boats will anchor, to avoid losing ground, until a breath of wind comes back.

Imagine losing a race because you couldn't set an anchor! ;-)

I have difficulty labelling a "cruiser" a non-sailor.

I think a "sailor" is anyone who has sailing (in any form) in their blood.

A novice sailor, is one who is just starting to learn and absorbs all input like a sponge.

An old salt, is one adept at making their boat go where they want, when they want, for quite some time, and still considers themselves "learning".

A curmudgeon is one who knows a little about sailing, but was done learning long ago.
