I just finished a delivery of a Swan 47 from Chesapeake to BVI. The last couple of days we were low on fuel and ultimately low on power so we shut off the a/p. Balancing the boat with sail trim allowed us to lock the wheel and sail on with a nudge to the wheel every 10 minutes or so. Close to beam reach. As noted above I'm not sure how well that would work on a broad reach or deeper.

Second that.

Here is a LINK

We were able to get our sloop to self-steer across the pacific much of the time with just a piece of surgical tubing from the tiller to a leeward cleat after balancing the sails.
