Re: Could anyone on a boat test this and tell me if this works?

The easiest thing is just to develop a taste for cool-ish, not ice cold, beer. My boat is sitting in 68 degree water so the beer in the bilge is cool enough for me. In the tropics where you really want a cold beer, or other libation, you'll need a LONG string, and a weight, but, yes it can be done, it will come up cool-ish and will not explode... as long as some bottom dweller doesn't beat you to it.

Re: Could anyone on a boat test this and tell me if this works?

I have done it in lakes and rivers here in alberta. Usually in the fall when hunting. Works great but the water is damn cold.
I doubt it would help much anywhere that you can swim in comfortably.
Now if you had some cans of any beverage that had been sitting in the sun, and were hot(like ones left in a vehicle) Dropping them in the water would bring the temp down to ambient quicker.

We do this on the Severn. Only needs about 15 feet, and you just have to wash the silt off after! (Or not drop it as far)

Could anyone on a boat test this and tell me if this works?

It will work, but requires serious depth.
I've dove a few times as deep as 100 meters and there is a temp drop, but not a whole lot, at least not in Florida.
Now maybe in places where it's cold for a large part of the year, like maybe the Great Lakes?

There is a significant temp depth at serious depths in open Ocean though, back in the 70's I believe there were test rigs to produce power from the temp differences

Re: Could anyone on a boat test this and tell me if this works?

In still water, lakes etc where the sun doesn't penetrate far and the water doesn't mix much I have felt big temp changes with depth. We used to put drinks in snow or rivers of snow melt but in the stirring ocean water there wouldnt be enough change with depth for me. I like beer so cold it is just off icing up when you let the pressure out.

Get a fridge. :-)

If you're moving, the drink will just trail behind you and not sink very far. If you're anchored, the water is probably not deep enough to make a significant difference.

Besides, they invented these things called "refrigerators" so if you want to make something cold, you put it in the refrigerator and it gets cold without all that bother.

Obviously you have to stop to have a drink-no drinking & driving.

OK...Try dropping a couple of beers on the longest string you have aboard.
What have you got to lose?
A couple of not so cold beers.

Re: Could anyone on a boat test this and tell me if this works?

I am surprised that some enterprising sailor has not run right out with 50' of string and a can and just dropped it over the side to try it yet. Lots of speculation, but seems like it would work
