Compass Mounting

I'm sure this has been covered here before, but I can't seem to find the correct combination of words to make it pop up in a search, so here goes:

I just bought a boat that has a binnacle mount compass in the steering wheel. It's got so many cracks, that's it's just about unusable and I will need a replacement. (of course that is the ONLY thing that my 35 year old boat needs)

Anyways I notice a flush mount compass is a lot cheaper than a binnacle mount, but I already have all the lower hardware, I just need the compass part.

Is it possible to retrofit a flush mount compass into my existing binnacle mounting hardware?

Re: Compass Mounting

I am refitting my Grandad's Cutter, she has a Ritchie 5" Globemaster binnacle mount compass built some time between 1965 and 1980. The dome had cracked all the through and almost all of the way around; the gasket was brittle and cracked, subsequently the fluid leaked out down to the bottom bezel. had all of the replacement parts I needed including the fluid at a great price too. I am in Cartagena, Colombia, so it will be a while until I get the parts, but $167 is a lot cheaper than a new compass. I talked to Howard and he was more than willing to talk me through the process of refilling the compass without getting air bubbles in the dome and tips on zeroing in the compass. I'm interested to hear what you ended up doing?
