Yep, still having fun with this.
I'm convinced if you could show me evidence you would.

I am convinced that the writer so heavily implied that bullet holes caused the sinking that they didn't feel a need to spell it out for the average reader. Either that or they specifically didn't say so in order to troll you.

I am convinced that you are more interested in arguing than in what really caused the buoy to sink.

Stop doing this to yourself. As an engineer you were convinced that the buoy was sunk by bullet holes now you concede that it was only implied.

I'd love to know what sunk the buoy but information to that effect wasn't supplied in the article.

You're free to draw your own conclusions...to me, it seems clear that at the time the article was written, there is strong evidence to support the theory that the holes had a causal effect on the sinking.

It cannot be said as a matter of fact until investigating the object's condition further...but as a matter of reasonable doubt it seems fair to say that holes in a floating object might be the cause for it to no longer be floating. But regardless, how about this conclusion:

Floating navigation aids = good.
Shooting navigation aids = bad.

Agreed?

Look like bullet holes to me. But then again if this gets to an OJ type of jury they may find these to have been resulted from bird droppings or some such.

Seems like a simple thing to prove. Would not the lead from the bullet holes be contained for the most part inside the buoy and if not contained then there must be a much larger hole where it exited from the other side. It was probably shot from a downward angle.

Not there live, up close and personal, but the photos look EXACTLY like bullet holes to me.

If the holes had been due to rust damage the holes would NOT be perfectly round nor would they show the circular indentation around the actual hole.

Have seen plenty of bullet holes in metal and either these are them or someone went to a lot of trouble to make holes that looked like them.

Re: Coast Guard Finds Critical Aids-To-Navigation Shot And Sunk Near Rhode Island

From a gCaptain article: (Notice the use of the word "holes."

Quote:
This is the second aid discovered with bullet holes within a week, the Coast Guard said.
Also the above is not a direct quote from the CG.

The Newport Daily News provided a direct quote from the CG concerning the second buoy:

Quote:
“The other buoy was Block Island Buoy No. 1 and it was found with a bunch of what looks like bullet indentations riddled around all of it,” Groll said. “So nothing actually pierced that one.”
So, possibly no bullet holes as reported by others.

Just enjoying getting to the bottom of this, pun intended.

2 buoys found sunk with bullet holes in them. The photo shows distinct bullet holes. I guess the question is whether or not the holes caused the sinking.

When you are in a stable and you pet an equine, do you think zebra?

Nope, you are correct. Shooting buoys is bad and the penalty is the same if it sinks or not.

I hope they find the idiots!

It was a second shooter from the grassy knoll.
