Only needed if the first one breaks down. But sounds pretty expense to have the spare.

Since you have done the trip, out of curiosity how many things did you have on the OP list?

Circumnavigation Top 20 List

  • Large (LiPO4) battery bank
  • Powerful Sinewave Inverter/Charger
  • Powerful generator matched to a powerful high-output AC watermaker, to minimise the time spent making water and running generator
  • AC appliances/devices (12v and battery-powered appliances/devices just don't cut the mustard), including

I'm still considering the generator. Honda 2000, might not make my 20 list though.

2nd epirb and vhf seem like overkill, but it has me thinking. The vhf is an easy addition, but the epirbs are $400 a piece.

The only electronics I feel that I need are related to the boat and navigation.

And my boat is a Pearson 323

Thanks for the response.

Weird. Two pages of posts with washing machines, microwaves and whatnot, and no radar.

Whatever floats your goat.

I've had a radar on my boat for seven years (15,000 sea miles, including two Atlantic crossings) and never used it other than to turn it on once or twice out of curiosity.

Certain things can be grouped together like "tools". Food and Water are a given and don't need to be listed.

The first three items must be:
1: Boat (includes engine and batteries)
2: Mainsail (includes rigging)
3: Headsail (includes rigging, winches, and handle)

My List
1: Boat
2: Mainsail
3: Headsail
4: Life raft and ditch kit
5: EPIRB
6: GPS Chart plotter
7: SAT phone (SAT communication of some sort)
8: Self steering vane
9: First aid kit
10: Dingy (Inflatable with motor)
11: Solar Panels
12: Spare Mainsail
13: Genoa
14: Storm Jib
15: Tools
16: Paper Charts
17: Laptop
18: Anchors and Rode
19: Life jacket and Harness
20: VHF (with AIS)

If this thread has already been done, please just post the link, if not, show me your list!
Why would a Sat Phone be irrelevant.? It is one of the most important safety items. Sending your position daily to onshore contacts is just plain common sense. VHF is out of range in mant places and flipping your EPIRB IS VERY MUCH A LAST RESORT. FOR $600 plus $100 of credit the Sat Phone is your cheapest and most comprehensive communication unit.

"Our Man" in "All is Lost" would strike the EPIRB and the handheld VHF. But, hey, he was Robert Redford. Just sayin'.

I'm with you on this one. Even if I didn't use the radar it would take up less space

Don't you ever get curious at night or anytime when visibility decreases to under couple of miles or so and want to see what might be out there?

Re: Circumnavigation Top 20 List

First time out we had no GPS, no AIS, no radar, no EPIRB, no Sat phone and no Spare Girlfriend! We did have 2 autopilots which both failed so a windvane is a good idea for ocean crossing on a smaller boat. Depending on your budget the difference between wants and needs is quite large. We are now cruising with all the bells and whistles because we want them but we don't need them. We can be very safe without any of the "stuff" so get a decent boat with decent sails and go sailing. Depending on peoples confidence or lack of they spend a disproportionate amount on safety gear.
