Great idea, but before trying to swim the English Channel first learn to swim. Learn to sail in a small boat (8-12ft.), then up grade to a pocket cruiser (18-15ft) , then learn for yourself what kind of boat you might use for a big trip. Lots of info out there on the net. Ken

Hi the length of trip depends on the seasons but you can then know exactly how long:

18 months: Extreemely fast. The World Arc does this one
2.5 years: Very fast. We are doing this. Its just a 'taste tester' we will do a second long slow one.
3.5 years: Quite fast
4.5 years: Getting better

Many boats take 6.5 years to 10.5 years

some never come back at all

Places where people can stop for a loooong time: Caribbean, Pacific, Malaysia/Thailand, Mediteranean.

OK, rheed, I've just come back from a beautiful, two hour sail. Sunset with cold beer included. I thought about your question. The "best boat," for me, to do what I just did, is a very lightly built, 24-foot Hunter. I'm still working towards the dream. If you can do it now, fantastic. Do it!

A couple years ago, I took nine (I counted) twenty-something lasses, all in bikinis, out for a quick run during a dock party. I am in my forties. That, of course, was the one and only time I saw no one I know out on the water. To this day, no one believes me, and I've got a lot of sailing buddies.

My very best sailing buddy is my dad. He loves to go out, to feel the press of sail, to handle the tiller, understand and guide the boat. His very first "cruise" was from Seattle to Okinawa, across the Northern Pacific, in the winter of 1944/45, as a teenager. He got seasick, had to "hot bunk" (do you know what that means? Hint: no one is getting laid), got attacked by Japanese submarines, airplanes and ultimately warships. He got to go to Greenland, afterwards, which was cool, for those who survived the first part.

We pick our sailing days together very carefully, weighing his age and physical condition against the weather. If he asked me the same question you did, "what's the best boat and how long will it take to go 'round the world?" I know the best boat, for my dad, given his needs and abilities:

The Queen Elizabeth, fully crewed.

And if he asks me how long it will take?

"Depends, dad, where you want to stop, how much time you want to spend and what you want to do when you get there?"

God, I'd love to do it with him!
