It is used, along with a tin-foil hat, to protect against aliens...

Rubbish! Don't you recognize a common 1.0 Reverse Flow Vortex Generator to offset the effects of water surface to masthead wind speed gradient when close hauled? That it receives TV signals is merely a coincidence, Non?

Re: Circular antenna on top of mast?

I have seen circular TV and VHF antennas, but they are normally mounted horizontally, ie with the ring in the horizontal plane.

Likewise.

It looks sorta like the antenna on old RDF (radio direction finder) units, but that cant be.

Re: Circular antenna on top of mast?

It is a TV antenna I think the photo just makes it look like it is vertical in the angle it was taken from. Of course the aliens among us would want us to think that right?

Re: Circular antenna on top of mast?

C'mon now, it's quite clear that's the auxiliary helm station. The boat is quite tender and the top of the mast is the only dry place when close hauled in a breeze. Also doubles as the conning station when working your way through coral. Or TV?
