"Chicken Wing" Stare

Most people are probably familiar with the chicken wing stare when getting ready to anchor. It normally takes the form of someone who is already anchored in the area standing on the bow with their hands on their hips giving you the evil stink eye while you chose the spot you plan to drop your anchor.

But there are many more uses for the chicken wing stare.

For example my wife has 2 forms involving boats out on the water. One involves giving it to some other boat when they are the give way boat when they haven't taken action early enough in her opinion. The other version she gives to me when she doesn't think I'm doing the same when we are the give way boat.

I bet there are lots more good uses for a well qualified chicken wing starer and since my wife has the pose down lets hear them so I get the most out of her.

That's not a not a "chicken wing stare", that's just a chicken wing stare. There's a difference

When you're rafted up with a buddy boat in a quiet bayou, and a newly purchased ski boat comes in pulling a wakeboarder and circles around your boats and leaves.......FOUR TIMES.... with a different child boarder each time.

Three hundred sixty degree wake will wreck havoc on rafted sailboats. We stood at the shrouds and tried to lessen the impacts but risk of injury and shear mass limit results.

In thier defense it was a brand new boat and new to the water family. Hope they learned something about being responsible for thier wake.

I learned something about rafting up. Don't do it unless you're in the middle of nowhere with flat seas.

I'm quite comfortable with less than boat-length crossings, if there has been eye contact.

What I will yell about is a close crossing when I realize they were on port, had no leeward watch, and had no clue that I was there. That is really my only pet peeve, the only thing that will induce a reaction, the result of some high speed close calls (in variable winds it is sometimes easy to mistake a shift for a give way course adjustment). I will explain in clear terms that if they can't keep a leeward watch they need to stay tied to the dock. No bitch wings; you'll hear me.

I don't care if it is close, so long as there is good eye contact.

But yeah, the chicken wing anchorage stance is a riot. I assume they believe they reserved the place. I keep my distance as best I can.

Apply the stare to anyone going over 5 knots within 30 m. of an anchored boat--especially when you have swimmers in the water.

Jet skis that are using your anchored boat for a turning mark, with or without swimmers.

Our friends "did the stare" just yesterday when a boat anchored ridiculously close. The guy on the other boat said "Don't worry, I'm insured"!


He then rambled on about how Chris probably had too much chain out, this guy was quite proud of "only needing" 25 metres, in 9 metres of water....

I suppose you could use the one I use for motoring monos, but I usually just give up, there are so many.

chicken wing stare, hell, i give em full on evil eye. works most every time--only fail time was involving a trawler in zihuat--trawler had xxxxx xxxx flag, which is the park too close flag...

"Bitch Wings" is the proper terminology.... I believe it's French for "angry Frenchman standing on the bow warning others to keep clear of his 300 feet of rode."
