Chicago Sailing

I am in Chicago for a few days and had dreams of getting out on the Lake for a sail.

But then its bitterly cold and it snowed last night. What is the sailing season here?

The lake looks huge - where do you sail to?

Curious....

Re: Chicago Sailing

Normally you start seeing boats out at this time of year, but it's been unusually cold. My boat goes in the water in a week. There are very few anchorages in Southern Lake Michigan, so boats don't go anywhere. They daysail, race or sit at the dock.

Re: Chicago Sailing

The sailing season is usually as follows:

Serious sailors - 1st week of May until Oct 31st or 1st week of Nov

Day sailors - End of May- Memorial day until 1st weekend of Sept- Labor day

For me, Im hoping on closing on my boat by end of May, but Ill be in the water till the end of Oct, There are great winds in mid to end Sept making some awesome sailing

Hope that helps.

Thanks - I am back in NZ now. There were some very sunny days at the end of last week :-)

I noticed quite a few of the boats I saw had a white plastic wrap over them? Is this to keep the snow off during winter?

Re: Chicago Sailing

Yes alot of people shrink wrap their boats in the fall to keep the snow off.
