Cheap Sailboat Sightings

We all hear good deals around the marina, owner wanting to sell, to sell fast, to sell cheap.
What about a thread for Cheap Sailboat sightings? Maybe just post type of vessel, basic general condition, and have any interested parties PM the poster.

I'll start, if you don't hear from me it means I've done wrong and got kicked off CF

Re: CHEAP SAILBOAT SIGHTINGS

Just to clarify. These are cheap sailboat leads. You don't have to know the owner, you see a derelict, no one ever aboard, heard she may be had for a song..etc. the marina office is usually open to pass a message on to the slip renters that there is someone interested in the boat...savvy?

Also can post the marina auctions events. This is when the marina and banks auction off the abandoned boats delinquent slip fees/with bank repo and sell. This is just to post the auctions times and dates. Many marinas do not advertise, many good deals are had by word of mouth.

Like this one?

Pops back up every now and again, but never really took off as hoped - IIRC the multihull one gained a bit more traction......

Re: CHEAP SAILBOAT SIGHTINGS

In some situations, I'm sad to say, the best course of action is to buy the boat, sell the lead in the keel, strip out everthing of worth or recyclable, and invert it on a cinderblock base to make a nice mancave/workshop.

Actually, this may be very useful. After visiting few marinas, it is impossible not to see a boat which has not been used for a while and very likely to sell if you show up with the money.

By the way, few months ago I read somewhere about a survey which shows that a huge % of boats (it was around 60-70%) during the year, are either taken out on the water for few times only, or not taken at all! Not sure if this is accurate but it came as a shocking discovery to me.

Re: CHEAP SAILBOAT SIGHTINGS

Yes, I bought a beautiful Pacific Seacraft 25 this way. The boat was dirty, had sat for years, rumor had it that several people had tried to buy it. I asked the marina if they would pass along a my phone number and a message to the owners that I was interested in the boat. A week later I got a call. The owner was a woman, and in the name of sisterhood sold me the boat for 5,000. She surveyed out at 20 though she probably realistically would of sold for 15ish. Still, darn good deal, had many fun years aboard her.

My friend told me about a boat, divorce boat, bought it for 375 dollars. I sold it a year or two later for 5-6( can't remember exactly). Was a nice US25 with motor full sails etc.

So keep an eye out, see a good deal, let us know.

DOJ, sorry to ripple your pond..maybe they can merge threads.

Was also thinking that a social group would work, then I could remove boats where owner has explicitly said they were not interested in selling, or posts that infringed on privacy...hmmm

Re: CHEAP SAILBOAT SIGHTINGS

I have owned many boats but may have made a mistake with the first one I bought with my wife. I bought a Cal 25 with a nicely running outboard that just needed a spray-down for $700 and a surfboard. It was cheaper than my first Sunfish! The owner had stepped up to a Cal 28 he got for a steal and didn't want to keep paying dockage for both.

Now that we are shopping in the 40' range she asks me "can you get that one for your mountain bike and $1200" about 80k boats

No worries - more power to your elbow , methinks a thread like this needs some effort from the OP to get (and keep) going....obviously more than I could be bothered with on the other thread .

Re: CHEAP SAILBOAT SIGHTINGS

I had a look at a Yamaha 33 some years ago and was asked to name whatever price entered my mind. I think the seller would have accepted that "whatever", even though the boat was in fine shape. I said I couldn't give an amount since I really didn't know the value of these boats and wanted to make sure it was a fair amount for the seller as well.
I didn't pursue any further since I'm into multihulls much more than monohulls, but looking back, I think I should have made an offer and/or found out the value of a boat like this.
It sold very quickly soon after and somebody got one heck of a deal.

Re: CHEAP SAILBOAT SIGHTINGS

Good idea for a thread! I keep posting deals I see now and then.

How about a Tanton 44 cat ketch? $9000,. Needs new motor, owner has 53 hp Yanmar that goes with the boat. Needs more too... but $9k???? NW Washington. A project I'm sure.
These are like a better looking, faster Valiant 42. I had the cutter version. It just sold again 15 years after I got rid of it... For $150-$170k.
This one's been in the family 25 years and been there and back.

Great idea. I almost posted the specifics on a 28 foot tri awhile back for $2500.
