Charter Advice Needed

Greetings all! 1st-I couldn't find an obvious spot to post this so Mods, please move if needed.

We currently passed our ASA 101 and are working on ASA 103; would like to do our first Captain or Crewed charter over the Holidays-Late December/Early January. Ideally with a captain who could do some instruction as we go along and even willing to do ASA 104/114 if scheduling allows, but this isn't a hard requirement. Really just trying to expose the kids to the cruising lifestyle and hopefully get them hooked!

Unfortunately the late December to Early January time frame is also when the rest of the world wants to be in the BVI and our kids school schedules (4 of them) limit our ability to book outside of those dates.

In short-looking for advice or recommendations on finding a charter in a warm weather/blue water destination proximal to the U.S. -Flying from the DFW area.

So, BVI, Belize, Puerto Rico, somewhere else? Happy with a mega charter group or a well recommended mom and pop who enjoy kids and teaching.

I recommend the BVI for a first charter destination. The time frame you're looking at will be the busy season, but that's going to be true for any place that meets your criteria. If you search around here for threads about the BVI, you will find a LOT of information.

We would pull our kids out of school for a week in Feb, to go skiing out west every year, it was for the purpose of avoiding the masses during the holidays.

The upshot 15 years later is my son will be eligible for parole next month (OK just kidding) both kids have college educations and careers and are contributing to the common societal good. The 10 weeks of school they missed did not seem to be missed.

A few years back and I'm in total agreement here, but the oldest just started high school so it's a bit tougher these days.



We're just starting out, trying to listen and learn and do charters here and there to both hone our abilities, but also to get the kids interested. Within the decade we will be empty-nesters and are doing what we can to prepare ourselves for cruising adventures yet to come.



We will keep searching for Dec/Jan opportunities and as always, appreciate any advice or insights!
