Chart Symbol on land

Hi, Does anyone know what the symbol that looks like a Chinese character is? My guess is that it is a form of vegetation or tree but I haven't been able to find it in any of the hand books. The chart is AUS 813 East coast of Australia (NSW). The symbols are close to the coast and usually near cliff tops.

Tree ( conspic) maybe?

Probably chopped down in about 1927....

Re: Chart Symbol on land

Greetings and welcome aboard the CF, rugby.

The symbols shown on official charts, produced by the Australian Hydrographic Service, generally conform to those Symbols and Abbreviations used on the British Admiralty Charts #5011.

Perhaps it is the "Mangroves" symbol?

Apparently your hydrographic office doesn't waste a lot of money of anything like our "Chart Number One".

Re: Chart Symbol on land

Thanks All,
No mangroves or any of the trees listed, Fialo looks similar though not the same, I don't know what they are and don't think they are on the Aust coast. One of the symbols looks like a Conifer with the "branches" removed from one side. Another mystery.
I will try to photograph and upload to the forum.

The symbols fringe the top of Barrenjoey Head on the chart, the google earth sat photo shows no vegetation at all. However there are boulders. The chart symbol does not match the symbol for boulders though

Re: Chart Symbol on land

A bit off subject, but my favorite chart notation is about an airstrip on one of the Bahamian islands: "Submerged at high tide".

Barrenjoey Head is on AUS 809 Port Jackson to Port Stephens, not AUS 813 Clarence River to Point Danger.

Barrenjoey Hd, as shown on AUS 809, has a rocky shore with one underwater rock dangerous to surface navigation. No Chinese characters, no conifers with branches removed on one side.

Lennox Head, as shown on AUS 813, has several underwater rocks dangerous to surface navigation, plus conspicuous pine (conifer) clumps inland. One of the underwater rocks has a known depth shown.

Re: Chart Symbol on land

Hi
The symbols are on both AUS 813 and AUS 809.
One clue is they are not present at the Northern part of AUS 813
The symbol is not a Chinese character but is similar.
Hopefully I have uploaded the photo showing the symbol.

Re: Chart Symbol on land

Well, the one chart does say "PINE CLUMP, CONSPIC(uous)" which fools me into rashly guessing the little drawing of a pine tree, is a pine tree.

Yep, I was right in post #7.

That's the symbol for an escarpment or cliff.

Re: Chart Symbol on land

Does the OP mean the symbol just north of the light, which is a submerged rock, dangerous to navigation, with the danger zone marked?
