Charleston Boatyards Info Needed

Charleston Boatyards info needed

Hi, y'all,

We have a wedding to go to in Charleston next spring and want to kill two
birds with one stone by getting boat work done on what may be (famous last
words) the last time Flying Pig sees the US mainland before we have to get
off the boat.

Charleston is several hours closer to the activity we'd do other than the
wedding during our time ashore, so we're considering basing in Charleston as
opposed to our previously expected yard in Fernandina Beach.

We have three requirements, all of which are met by our previously expected
yard, Tiger Point Marina, with whom we'd been very happy in the past:

The yard must accept our self-insured status

The yard must allow us doing some work on our boat, and living aboard during
that time (during which time we'd expect daily lay day charges)

Bottom job and other work done by the yard will allow us to not pay storage
during the time the boat is there while _we're_ not working on the boat

Recommendations?

As I have sometimes-limited access to broadband, which limits my ability for
web-based applications, if you'll also copy responses me directly at
skipgundlach@gmail.com I'd very much appreciate it.

Thanks, so much...

There's a big difference between self-insured (huge cash reserve) and uninsured (no insurance).

I suggest that you contact each boatyard and ask them directly.

I doubt you will find any that will let you do any major work on your boat without insurance. Perhaps you can post a bond of some sort.

Thanks for the recommendations for those to contact. Once I know what/which they are, I'd do that, of course.

Once I'm finished with that research, whether or not I decide to stay with Tiger Point, I'll publish the results here, as I did when I did the search for FL/S.GA yards prior to the decision for Tiger Point a couple of years ago.

The Society for the Preservation of Tithesis commends your ebriated

eptitude to choose such putably pensible tithesis, which we parage.

Hi, Y'all,

I promised I'd report back when I had results. The delay has been caused by
my inability to reach Hazzard and Dolphin Cove...

I also did a comparative analysis between our top choices, Tiger Point
(Fernandina Beach, not, of course, Charleston) and Rockville Marine. For
our purposes, they were similar in cost, but not being able to live aboard
(requiring hotel costs) has forced us to return to Tiger Point, not a
negative, as we've had excellent results personally, as well as have
encountered many cruisers who share our positve thinking about their
experiences with them.

My report:

Hazzard marine never responded to several emails...

Dolphin Cove Marina - Haul Out
DIY, (less than 3 months) $15.00 per ft per month, Up to 2 people
$150.00 + Monthly Wetslip Storage Fee, $1.00 per ft per night ( Boats are
measured Length Overall )+ $5.50 for electrical hookup ("electricity is
metered," so presume one-time fee? ), haulout and PW/Bottom work not
specified, unknown extra labor - sent another 8-11, 8-25, no response

Pierside Boatworks - About Us
H//L $10, PW 3.75, 2coats 18 + T+M to prep, Lay 1.50/day, storage 1/day or
13/month, contract, 87.50 - Response:
We do not have facilities here & do not allow living on the boat in our
yard. It will take us a maximum 4 days to complete the bottom job, assuming
there is no rain. D-I-Y storage & storage rate will apply the day we are
finished. I do apologize for the delay in responding to your email.

Thank You,
Lisa

Charleston's Southern Hospitality Boatyard
H/L 7.50, PW 3.50, Prep+1 coat 14+M, then $85/hour, 45Lay, dockside 1, store
10/mo Response: No Liveaboard, no DIY

Charleston City Boatyard
H/L 8 4PW, 2coat 19+M, lay 2, 85 extra labor,
Response: Seahawk Cukote $263.00 /gallon paint = prep and apply @
$29.50/foot, port risk policy (offered source for
liability insurance for a year's coverage), storage once work done @14x46/mo

Rockville Marine | About Us
Unknown on all, but appear to be high-end refit place, do weekly runs to
Dominey, referred to in a forum response as allowing DIY - sent another
8-11, to marine propulsion addy since the other bounced...

Response from Marine Propulsion: 2495 all-in 2 coats. Analysis and further
after bottom job:

55/40 waterline H-L-B-PW-2coats +70/Hr+mat (est 3-500 total) for added coats
at waterline, etc. + 1mo free (450 second month), no liveaboard, but can DIY
est total <3k all in

Tiger Point, Fernandina Beach:
Est: HBLPW 13x45 + 14x40 + sanding labor (unknown - use 75x 10?) + est 5x
240 or 425 paints, (585 + 540 + 750 + 1200/ 2125 + 65/wk liveaboard
= est 3150 min 4100 max
