Recently a Folk Boat set off from Cornwall to Ireland. The owner has removed the engine to provide more room down below...

This video shows the skipper sculling his way down the River Helford. A less patient yacht tries to overtake and quickly runs aground!

I know the owner of the Folk Boat. He removed the engine for more room down below. I'm not sure what you think, but for me an engine is quite a nice luxury!

Was the overtaking boat really so in the wrong? If he'd completely cut his throttle he'd probably still coasted past the folkboat!

I'm not sure what I'd do in that situation - I wouldn't really like to sit behind the folkboat at 1 knot or less - I think I'd give plenty of room, and overtake. And presumably run aground too!

Considering the situation, the overtaking vessel could have easily closed to hailing distance and negotiate passing. Or, as a last resort the vessels could have exchanged appropriate sound signals. You know, overtaking inland, one short blast for starboard and two short blasts for port. With the overtaken vessel responding the same if OK.

Of course the above assumes that the overtaking vessel knows where the channel is. I'm not real sure that that is the case here.

Anyway, everyone in command of a overtaking vessel need to know how to safely pass a slower moving vessel in a restricted channel. It's like knowing how to safely change lanes while driving.

There are no Inland Rules in Helford River: this isn't the USA but the United Kingdom. Then, Colregs rules 9 e and 34 c apply: the correct sound signal would be 2 long blasts an 2 short blasts to indicate one's intention to overtake on the port side.

The correct answer would be: one long blast, one short blast, one long blast, one short blast.
