Caribbean: resort and sailing

I did not find a forum for destinations so posting here.

We would like to go sailing to Caribbean in February for a week. The problem is that some in our group want to go sailing while some prefer to stay ashore. So I am looking for a place with the following conditions:

1. Nice resort by the beach (that is the easy part
2. A few interesting small islands within 3-4 hours of sailing so we can do day trips returning by night
3. An anchorage or mooring not far from the resort.
4. An island where I could charter a sailboat

Any ideas where I could find such place? St. Marten satisfies all conditions (trips to St.Barts and Anguila) but it would be expensive as each of those islands is in a different country.

If there is a better site or forum to ask this question, please, point me to it.

St Martin (FR) and St Barts FR) no problem.. St Martin Dutch side you just clear the boat in.. same with Anguilla.. not expensive.. Dutch side limited anchoring apart from the lagoon and Phillipsburg.
Hire a Cat in Marigot.

What does it mean "just clear"? I remember paying a lot in Anguila for the right to visit some two small islands

St Martin.

Resort is a bit of a strong word, but for $100 per night at Marys Boon you are right on the beach in Simpson Bay. A million restaurants and drinking places and ... Boats everywhere ...

There are rental Cats in Ambergris Cay and Placencia. There is an entire reef plus several atolls to sail around. We like Placencia because of the food and short sails to the reef and all the cays. The resort action in Placencia is much cooler than in Ambergris which looks pretty hot. All the sailing can be short day stuff from one cay to another.

Re: Caribbean: resort and sailing

I haven't looked at it in detail, but a company I've dealt with just sent me an e-mail advertising combined sailing charter and villa rentals in the Bahamas. It must be somewhere on their website; I haven't found the details:

Westin Resort St. John. Fabulous Resort with full amenities. Charter an Island Packet from St. Thomas which is a 10 minute ferry ride away. Lots of islands to choose from for a day sail.. LOTS. Even the BVI if you care to but not even necessary.

Another possibility is Scrub Island in the BVI.

The Abacos - The Resorts in Marsh Harbour are OK but I would suggest your friends rent a house in Hope Town or stay at the Hope Town Harbour Lodge. Hope town has a great harbour with a whole string of islands to explore on day trips or multi nights - every island is unique and interesting.

This is way less crowded than St Martin.

Re: Caribbean: resort and sailing

Check out the Bitter End Yacht Club on Virgin Gorda, BVI.

They have many daysailing boats available, as well as planned excursions to other islands.

Or if you prefer, you can charter a bareboat in the BVI and moor it nightly on one of the Bitter End's moorings - taking daysails as you like, while your guests enjoy the resort.

There are MANY islands to visit that are just a short hop from the Bitter End.

Re: Caribbean: resort and sailing

Another BVI option in addition to Scrub Island 's the Bitter End resort on Virgin Gorda. It has a small beach and lots of available small boat sailing options and is a nice resort. It's also a reasonably short distance from Tortola where there are lots of charter opportunities and also close to other small island sailing/snorkeling opportunities. Another option is the pretty pricey Peter Island resort which has a beautiful beach and is within easy sailing distance of Tortola and very close to other small islands including St. John in the USVI. Lots of fun to be had!

Re: Caribbean: resort and sailing

Bitter End was my first thought as well. Belize a great option but a little "rougher" from the resort lovers point of view. Placencia a cool little town with a moorings base.
