In similar past incidents, one common factor is an overworked and underpaid watchkeeper.
These ships carry two watchkeepers, Master and Mate, working 6 on 6 off.
The Mate is also responsible for the cargo operations.
Some of these coasters have hectic schedules, with the Master and Mate both ending up suffering from sleep deprevation.
There have been a number of studies into this watch keeping system, and the conclusions are that its not good on a working cargo ship. However, it will need government
intervention to put an end to it.
Note the ships flag state, definitely flag of convenience.
