Captain Cook,

Is that because they lost the World Cup (rugby) semi-finals to New Zealand?

Re: Cargo Ship Aground in NZ

Rugby ? I guess they don't play REAL football down under

I can see there isn't any rivalry between OZ and NZ... hehehe

Seriously, hope you all come up with a solution to that ship wreck... damn shame...

Hang in there...

Re: Cargo Ship Aground in NZ

[QUOTE=Dame.n.Jess;795527]Man I hope we dont become a state of Australia, I'm a kiwi living in Sydney and as a culture NZ is miles apart from Australia when you get into it.

Insert Kiwi joke... hehehe. (But I WONT mention the rugby). Funny the only people that talk about NZ being a state of Oz are Kiwis. Aussies dont really see it that way.

I did a trip from Gladstone to NZ on a kiwi boat years ago and the two kiwis kept saying how much NZ was like that. But you guys seem so less regulated and relaxed than us. To the point that your harbour at Auckland is sooo well set up for boaters. Unlike Sydney, which is beautiful of course, but has no real organisation around the recreational marine industry.

It was amazing to see such a well organised marina that actually had parking and a mulitude of nearby competative boating stores.

Re: Cargo Ship Aground in NZ

The sad thing for you guys is Aussies really don't care that about NZ, this is a beautiful part of the world and this accident is a tragedy, but Australia is already over loosing to the all blacks again and NZ has been forgotten, again.
Still good luck against the frogs you guys need something to smile about after all the bad things that have happened to you lately, with eartquakes and mine acidents.
As for becoming part of Australia though, you wish we have enough problems of our own, LOL

Re: Cargo Ship Aground in NZ

We've had these sort of problems in the UK too. It really is time the Authorities, (it used to be Lloyds) improved the design (mimimum two main engines) and maintenance standards.
No open insurance = no port entry and no transit through national waters.
The med got a tanker washout slick recently, spotted by Survey Aircraft, believed to be, but not proved, another 'Liberian' flagged vessel.
It only happens because it's cheaper!!!!!!

Re: Cargo Ship Aground in NZ

This particular vessel is owned by a Greek company, flagged to Liberia and crewed by Filipinos and chartered by a company here in NZ to carry freight from port to port.

Its going to take quite a while to sort out the tangled legalities and liabilities I'm sure .... and that's probably the reason why its set up like it is.

Despite large fractures in the hull of the vessel and signficant pounding from 3-5 metre swells the ship is still in one piece, although salvors are expecting the rear 1/2 to 2/3 to break off the ship at some point. All 88 containers that have left the vessel have been accounted for and have either beached or sunk and the locations of even those underwater are known. The fuel oil is the biggest unknown at this stage and its proving to be a challenge to get the gluggy stuff off the vessel.

Re: Cargo Ship Aground in NZ

Its amazing how we (as modern humans) freak out over a single ship losing oil. During wwii there were literally thousands of ships sunk. Mostly merchant ships, some of the older ones were coal fired, but the majority of them were oil. Yet, with all that destruction ,there isnt a black stripe around the edge of the oceans. Somehow mother earth takes care of these messes. Yes, it makes a temporary mess and yes some sea life is lost. But in reality, the planet, very cleverly tidies up after mankind makes a snafu of the environment.

Over 50 US ships (not inc UK, OZ, Canadian etc) were lost at Normandy alone
Around 160 in the Carribean.
Still there is no black stripe.
U.S. Merchant Ships Sunk or Damaged in World War II

How clever is our planet!!
