Re: Can This Be Repaired?

ah..a strong electric winch..yep..
but I was about 10ft from the top of our mast when
the rope back wound on the winch and jambed.. bending the
metal part shown...
ah not close enough to grab the top..too from up from the staysail to hold on..

but I'm here to tell about it.. thankfully..
NO! I don't want to do that again..

for the few $..buy a new one..if you can fix it keep it as a spare..
what's the price when it fails when you need it the most..
our was destroying the plastic rope grabbing parts each time we used it.

That's what I was thinking. It's no use as it is, might as well try straightening it back.

But order a new part anyway.

If you bent it with the winch, find a way to load it in the opposite direction and use the winch again.

They're not? Hmm I must have missed the memo... But for the OP I would just replace it just plain easier for what my 2¢ are worth...

Re: Can This Be Repaired?

Bending it back worked for me. It is only guiding the line and if you put enough wraps on it will not be under enough tension to bend again.

63’ Oyster?
Not the kind of boat that you bend parts back in my opinion, replace it.

Re: Can This Be Repaired?

Having trouble finding one online since most retailers only stock up to size 58 or so. Looking like it's going to be a $225-$275 part, so I might try to repair it. I'll make some calls Thursday to try and find the part.

How did you go about doing that?

Re: Can This Be Repaired?

Guy can afford a few million dollars worth of boats but not at $250 part....sounds right to me.
I bet you get your dock lines on sale at the dollar store too.

First figured out exactly where it bent. Then put in bench vice and hammered. Mine is a Lewmar ocean series 30, smaller but same concept. The guys it Lewmar actually recommend it

Maybe I’m being dense, and I definitely realize I’m not being helpful, but I still can’t visualize how the winch being over loaded caused the tailer to bend forward.

The question was... "can this be repaired?" I wasn't asking for rude, thoughtless, obnoxious, sniping, inappropriate jabs like you seem to enjoy offering up. When someone on this forum asks for help with a repair or improvement on their boat whether it's a freebie boat or 5 million dollar yacht, no matter the cost... I always try my best to offer helpful advice based on my experience, just like the other thoughtful respondents on this thread.

You should learn to do the same, because someday... YOU may be the one doing the asking.

The winch wasn't overloaded, there were only three or four wraps on the winch when I sheeted in the yankee in what I thought were light winds of maybe 12-15 knots. As the wraps tightened, the wraps pulled (were drawn) downward towards the base of the winch under great force which resulted in deforming the guide arm to the angle of pull. Now I know to wrap the winch at least six times so the guide arm will be at the correct angle when under load.

Judging by the other respondents.... I'm not the first one to have this happen, we learn something new every day.

Re: Can This Be Repaired?

Well I for one am glad to have seen this as it will help me learn from your mistakes. So thanks for sharing. I’ll try to remember this image next time I think I don’t need more than a wrap or two.
