Can anyone get a yacht to Ascension island?

Dear Cruisers forum,

A small group of us are looking to acquire a yacht to sail around the Ascension island. We have a budget between 5 and 10 thousand and if someone is able to get it over to us here then we will most likely purchase it.

Our only other option is to have one sent in container from UK or Cape Town but then limited to 19ft.

Always worth asking

Why not buy one and sail it over yourselves... should be a fun trip.

Welcome to CF

So you are asking a seller to sail to the Ascension Islands and if you like the boat you will buy it. What does the seller do if you don't buy it?

I think your idea of sticking it in a 20ft ISO and shipping is better. Not sure I would want to take a $10k yacht to the island. In that price range a lot of stuff will need to be checked first.

The other option is to build yourself a Tiki 21:

The Tiki 21 called Cooking Fat did rather well in the Jester Challenge and would be ideal for Ascension, easily beached and lifted out during bad weather:

Another Tiki 21

A Drascombe Lugger would fit in a 20 foot box... ideal for what you want to do.
cheers,

Re: Can anyone get a yacht to Ascension island?

Well, thought it would sound crazy but never know who might read this and be considering an adventure!

My thoughts are if someone has enough confidence in their boat to sail it here then that is enough for us to buy it. A general inspection report would probs be a good idea before committing.

Our big obstacle here is getting anything to us and it is very frustrating. We have someone who has offered to do yauchtmaster training, we just need to secure an appropriate boat to get here. Perhaps a container will be the only option but being as this is a spear fishing and diving mecca there might be someone prepared to take the trip and fly home from here after a good holiday!

Will have a look at the Tiki although looks a little exposed, would prefer something with guard rails and deeper cockpit with cabin area for the kids if the tradewind revs up as it does out the blue here.

Many thanks for the advice though any more ideas welcome

Re: Can anyone get a yacht to Ascension island?

So if we were to go with something like the Tiki 26, plans would need to be bought for a few hundred I can see.

Does anyone sell a kit for these things so kit can be bought or maybe just a rigging kit of sail, steerage, standing rigging, running rigging etc.. Any idea how much materials would be for a Tiki26?

Re: Can anyone get a yacht to Ascension island?

The Tiki 30 looks even a little more solid although that is a lot more boat and probably not so easily pulled onto the beach when not in use. Cost of materials/kit would be the decider. Someone has a container coming over from Cape Town on next RMS with space so possible to put kit in if the right thing.

Around 20K with materials - TIKI 30 is way over budget sadly, perhaps the 21 or 26 although will need to research cost of materials etc..

I think we might end up importing a Hunter Europa or two to get us started in a container or two.

Not the most informative post but thankyou, yes it is in the middle of no where and hence the slight problem in getting a sailing boat out here!
