Re: Buying Boat In US And Getting It To Europe..

And the process of finding and buying a boat in the US has got to be lengthy and expensive. The preparation for cruising much the same.

Not to mention the delivery cost or the time, expense and skill needed to do it yourself.

Last time I looked some of the boats in Greece looked to be real good value, though I'll admit to liking green grass (other side of the fence type) myself.

American's can't get into Canada if they have been convicted of a DUI.

It's possible to get into Canada with a DUI if you have a "compelling reason".

I have not been stopped or questioned yet. I'm not sure why. It could be that it has not been recorded on my passport.

However, I do know that you CAN get denied at the border.

There both official and unofficial processes to get around this, but there is always the risk of getting denied.

I would simply skip the US.

Head for the Carribean - plenty of US boats, and sounds like US prices.

True, I was assuming she's got a boat in mind, but the Caribean is likely easier to reach, more open to visitation, and almost certainly a cheaper place to buy a boat. I'm not sure about their legal controls though... possibly a greater risk of buying a stolen or unregistered boat, depending on which islands you are working in?

Oops sorry

TUI Marine is the official broker for Moorings, if you're interested in ex-charter or yachts currently in charter.

Maybe it's time to ask what kind of boat you're interested in?

You are right. It costs about $200.00 everytime to have a compelling reason.

Re: Buying Boat In US And Getting It To Europe..

I'm looking for a 30-40 foot full keel ketch, decent saloon with a 'L' shaped sofa, gallery place with litte room to move, a good sleeping place, a spray head i think it's called? so i can be outside with some waves without getting all the sea over myself, headroom inside since i'm 6'3... lots of storage space, head compartment with shower would be nice but not needed, places to put solar and wind gen.
I liked this one boat but dining table folded up so where i want a tv is a occupied space and no cabinets above benches inside + no L shape.
And it should be below 30,000 usd if possible...
Lots of little things and probably more, but after looking at loads and loads of boats I know it's possible. I'm hopefully going full time liveabroad/cruising, so i realy want something I would love. Oh and fiberglass hull and no woodwork outside.

Edit: And I'm singlehandling on a budget...

Look at Pearson 365
Pearson 365

Not a full keel but built strong with long keel that will easily take the ground and skeg hung rudder for strength. Good interior layout even with a separate sit down shower. The ability to close off the shower will be a major plus for cruising northern latitudes. Condensation from a shower is a big concern,

Re: Buying Boat In US And Getting It To Europe..

To be blunt - I think your budget would be difficult even if you were based in the US (with the luxury of time to hunt out a deal). Given your added hurdles of buying at a distance and going transat I would consider the idea unrealistic.....not to say that you couldn't end up buying a boat - just that you are heavily relying on luck that she is what you hoped for in condition. and if (when?) not, then the "fun" and the expenses start.

I appreciate that Norway likley not the biggest market to shop in (and with the prices to match?) - in your shoes I would be looking at Europe / UK. Will likely be a higher purchase cost but that offset by easier (coastal hopping) passage to Norway (or even deciding not to bother going "home"!) and your ability to get eyes on (before buying) and then hands on (with fixes) more easily and cheaply.

Of course if not needing to head to Norway - turning up in the Carribean with the cash in the bank and on a buying mission with a view to commencing your travels / extended vacation from there may well work well (if you can avoid needing to buy within a week!).....at least then you are hands and spanners on 24/7 until she is ready to go further afield (home to Norway?).

I do want a aft sleeping area though, as sleeping in the V-berth would be a pain when waves hit it..

I'm not going until i have enough cash to buy, refit, and travel to where i would want to go when the time comes, and a bit more. I'm not in a rush, just weighing out every option I can think of Norway do have some decent boats, and I can find them here for a ok price, but finding a ketch here is nearly impossible, and then if you add some 'wants' to that..... Looking in europe too ofc, and when I do go out to buy, I will make sure I have at least 6 months to a year or two to buy, refit, sail and going back to norway eventually..
So
