Bucket List

I have a bucket list, and it's a simple one. I had to leave Imagine in Panama due to illness. I want to return to the boat, and sail her to Hawaii, the home of my ancestors, and leave my dad's ashes in the vicinity of his grandfather's home. Then sail home to the S.F. area. As always time will tell me what to do.

Take what you have, and make the best of it. Use the boat you have, and go if that's your list. The only thing to fear is fear itself. As far as your comments tongue in cheek. Good for you in having a sense of humor. A good laugh will cure many things. BEST WISHES in your health, but I think the first step is get what's ailing you diagnosed. Maybe the whitecoats can help, and maybe they can't? It's always best to use every tool available to get through life........i2f

Thanks for dragging us back on topic, hummingway... Preparing a bucket list should take into consideration how much time one has to complete it. Pagan could have a few good years to accomplish his list and might be governed by that. Having been given only weeks on this side of the grass about 15 years ago, I set out to get 'ur done in 6 months. Ran through the list pretty quick and for the last 12 years have found new things to add, most of them involved getting into charity work, helping others out and giving other folks less fortunate than I am a chance to experience some really fun things like over night cruises off the coast, teaching a physically challenged young guy how to drive and guiding a blind woman down a ski slope. I get more out of the experience than they did. Being faced with a 'sell buy' date on your life focusses you on what is really important. Getting even has never been high on my list because I never had anyone take advantage of me that would cause a serious reaction like revenge. We deal the cards we're dealt and sometimes the game lasts but only an instant or for many years. Bucket lists IMHO are a way to concentrate our efforts on what is really important as Jack Nicholson taught Morgan Freeman in the movie.
What is left on mine? Finishing the restoration of a 1955 mahogany Chris Craft Continental that is sitting in my garage... cheers, Capt Phil

1) Cruising the Caribbean Islands while I'm still young enough to do it - slowly. And with someone as excited to do it as I am. (That may be happening.) Find a cannon or a treasure chest while I'm doing it!!

2) Riding across the US on my Harley, slowly this time. (Maybe with someone as excited to do it as I am.)

3) Running out of money the same time my hourglass does.

Do you recognise those times when after you have written something and posted it, you think back on it and say to yourself "I shouldn't have put it quite like that, it's got to come out wrong" but you can't take it back! DUH!! I now preview my posts for a third time and still probably miss something.

I've often thought my last act would be to sail away into the sunset, after easing my families mind about my actions. My father died recently of ALS. He lived a full life and died without regrets but his last couple years he was in a full care facility. It worked for him but it's not where I want to end my days. I do my best to keep my mind and body well but when they start to go I think it will be time to simplify the choices anyone else has to make for me. Goodbye will do.

Really and genuinely sorry to read about your father as that to me would be hell. Basically you have just put my thoughts into words - thank you for that. I have talked it over with my family and although the concensus was ' We want to have you with us as long as we can' they fully understand my reasoning. They say you can't help where you are born or where you die, well I want to choose the latter. My ideal would be to emulate Joshua Slocum, when in 1909 he set sail never to be seen again.

I am afraid I'm in your 'one design class' old chap. I'd like to be a rebel but I don't have it in me, my wife says I'm so straight I'm boring (when in the police I arrested an inspector who subsequently went to prison and reported a Sergeant not one law for police and one law for the rest of society), hence the tongue in cheek comment to seem a bit less boring.

Now all the ex-cops are going to hate me - can't win!

I am not 'crossing the bar' lightly or negligently I did my Yachtmaster Offshore in 1977, again in 1988 and again in 2010. I have ICC's in sail and power up to 24 metres and a host of sundry qualifications.

I still try and plan as though I will lifor ever and live as though today's my last, don't always manage it though.

I like the concept of your original post. I have a "bucket list"--an actual written out list that I get to cross items off of (and add to).

I have it because my father spent years planning and preparing for his circumnavigation after his retirement. He passed before he made it to retirement.

I have "big", "small", "fun", and "serious" items on the list. It just keeps me focused on living/enjoyiing my life NOW.

Here is just a few items on my list:

Spend one year cruising in the Carribean
Watch baby sea turtles hatch
Swim under a secluded waterfall
Run a 5K
Sail up the ICW (again)
find a shipwreck artifact (actual value not necessary)
Be published

Best of luck with all the items on your list-keep crossing them off!!

I hope others share their "bucket list" items- you started what could be a fun and inspiring thread.

Here is my bucket list off the top of my head:
Visit Hawaii
Sail around the world
Learn to surf and do it for a while
Sail the inside passage to Alaska
Live in a permaculture ecosystem or greenhouse.
Build a home.
Kayak all of Puget Sound.
Raise a child.
Be a hermit.
Spend ten days in silent meditation.
Go alone through nature for a month or a year.
Skateboard a handrail.
Go to a rainbow gathering.
Visit skatopia.
Try out different sailing rigs on small boats.
Make a few more boats.
Go hunting.
Keep a cat. (The mammal.)
Cook delicious meals.

That's all!

ps Have a bathhouse with a sauna and a hot tub!

I feel lucky reading this. At 46 I've already crossed off a lot.
Still, I'd like a ride in a fighter jet,
I want to catch a huge tuna,
I want to learn to relax again,
I want to dive in a cenote,

One cool thing I've found is the Zero Day Project (Day Zero - The Home of the 101 Things in 1001 Days Project), they advocate making a list of 101 things you'd like to do in the next 1001 days. Basically a bucket list in my mind. You can always do something similar on your own too, and keep adding to it as you cross things off.

One cool thing I am attempting to do is take pictures and write a little blurb in blog each time I do something on my list, and eventually turn that into a sort of scrapbook to hand down to my future kids, etc... (I'm 30, not yet married, no kids yet, blah, blah) LOL

Here's a few of mine:
