Broken hearted - Can't sail
Had an automobile accident and lacerated my spleen. Doctor's have told me not to sail for 3 months or more because if I bang or pull and reopen the injury I could bleed out before I even got to shore.
I had just readied the boat for summer and installed a new water system and had a planned Delmarva circumnavigation in the works for June. Why didn't this happen in the dead of winter?
Bleck.

That last sentence should be on the ultimate sailors tee-shirt.
To take a spleen laceration in the winter, so that you wouldn't miss a sail, has got to been the most devout sailor's lament
My hat is off to you sir!!

Re: Broken hearted - Can't sail
Sorry to hear about your accident. Hang out at the marina and enjoy just relaxing on your boat. Make up a sailing story about how you were injured saving the boat in the storm of the century, fighting off pirates, fending off powerboaters, etc. Good luck with a speedy recovery.

Re: Broken hearted - Can't sail
Listen,,, this might not be the right time,,BUT, boats need to be sailed. i volunteer to take yours out to keep it in shape.
On another note, best of luck, i remember when I had my first motorcycle accident. Broke left leg, left arm, left collar bone all the first week of summer. i sat at our cottage watching my sisters water ski and swim everyday while i sat inside. Will teach me not to do 90 in a 55. I was 19 at the time. Know how you feel.

Re: Broken hearted - Can't sail
ok....consider it penance for car ownership--get well soon and then sail--3 months is a lot less than forever or dead.

Re: Broken hearted - Can't sail
Hi - I am SO with you. Much less dramatically, I dislocated a finger really badly in February. It's now May and I can't grip a rope. Which makes short handed sailing a non-no as it's dangerous. So no cruising for us this summer either.
Doctors say it will be August before I might be able to grip a rope, and possibly Xmas. And it could be ' three to four years' before it stops hurting. All from one tidily trip over a door jamb.
So lots of commiserations and sympathy and find an exciting alternative for this year. (Ours is a long trip elsewhere but we're still finalising the details.)

Some times the doctors are right. Recoup, regroup, and make ready for another day. Just pretend we are having an unusually long stretch of poor weather. You wouldn't leave if the weather was bad. In your case it clearly isn't good enough yet. You still might make early September after that it may have to be next year and you just sail down the bay and back instead.

Blue Stocking, that is exactly what I was thinking!Damn fine sailor, ye are.
Now listen to those scalawags doctors and especially listen to your nurses , you Do Not want to prolong this. Keep eye out for complications/ infections, lots of fluids( to keep those pipes running smooth) and no sneaking the boat out.
Sorry get well soon

i was young, dumb, and full of I know everything (what did you thing I would say),,had 2 more after the first one,( right arm muscles), (right leg) plus went through a windshield in a car, plus fell off a roof. Starting to feel it as i am hitting 47 this year. i can tell when it is going to rain. When I was 18 my parents took out a 1/2 million dollar life insurance policy on me. When I hit 25 they canceled it. They figured after all that I would be around for some time.
