brand new rookie questions

I am brand new just got a hunter 23 to learn the basice. I did have a sunfish on the Mecong River between Thailand and Laos.

1. best outboard size to push it
2. regular or long shaft
3. what are the white things on the lines and what are they made of

Sure I will have a lot more questions as I go forward.

a 5 or 6 hp long shaft should be fine for that boat.

Those white things to which the lines are tied are called "sails."

Best outboard size is going to be a function of how and where you use the boat. If you operate the vessel in an area with strong currents or winds you're going to want more horsepower. You can get by with 5 hp, which will probably get you up to hull speed in flat water, but you'd be better off with a 9 hp if you are in challenging conditions.

Regular or long shaft is going to be a function of how and where it is mounted. If you have the option, I would mount the bracket higher and opt for the long shaft.

Not sure what you mean with your last question. Can you be more specific?

Shroud - Sail protectors which keep the wire shroud from chafing the sail when tacking or when backwinded.
