Botany Bay to Pittwater

Hey All;

Has anyone recently sailed from Botany Bay to Pittwater? I am planning to tack Salmo to Pittwater in the next few days and just need approx. time for trip planning.
I am aware that there are a number of variables but I am just looking for an indicative time frame!
Believe it or not I have to do this because it is impossible to get a local marine diesel mechanic to do a 300 hour service on the Yamaha diesel around Botany Bay...

If you average 6 knots I would say 7 hours allowing for time to get out and back in down Pittwater.

Hi BEN373,

Thank you, I have allowed between 7 and 9 hours, plan on leaving at 9am tomorrow. Hopefully that change from SE to NE will hold off.

It looks like the East Australian Current is quite slow around Sydney at present and you may actually get a bit of help.

However the wind forecast is also light (variable 10 knots) so you might need to do a fair bit of motoring. Assuming an hour to get out of Botany Bay and an hour in from Barrenjoey, that leaves close to 30 miles offshore. If you average 5 knots towards the destination that would make 8 hours in total.

May be better to buy the manual and some tools and do the work yourself. It is really not rocket science and you will become less dependent on others, which is a big plus for cruising.
Only rider here is that you can't do this if warranty is involved. If that is the case, if you can persuade the mechanic to teach you as he goes it will be money (or a slab of beer) well spent!

Why not stop at Sydney there are plenty of mechanics. i use Sydney Diesel and the service is flawless.
Anyway, 8 hours is about right. You are going against the current on the way but it can really push you along on the return journey. You'll be back in no time!

Thank you Bill. I would have had to sell the boat to have work done in Sydney. I am at La Peruse now so will leave at 4am and should get up there by midday. 😀 it's a pleasant night out any way.

What I found was that you can get much closer to the mechanic when in Pittwater than in Sydney. As they charge traveling fee of $90 per hour its really a great idea to be able to tie up at their front door.

Just case anyone is interested; trip details -
Captain Cook Bridge to Church Point is 41.4 nautical miles
With wind, waves and swell on the nose all day and cruising at an average of 4.44 knts took 9 hours and 19 minutes.

Plenty of dolphins thought I needed company and escorted me most of the trip.
I have to get me sailing partner.

distance from Botany Bay to Barren Joey light is (very) roughly 36 nautical miles. so depending on your speed - and weather- that should take about 6 or 7 hours.
