Books Timid Spouses Are Not Allowed to Read

As the title says I'm very keen on keeping my beloved from freaking herself out over someone else's Phobias or bad experiences sailing.

Learning from seasoned sailors is one thing..sensationalism to sell a book is another..

So I thought I would start this thread as a one stop shop of all titles baned off the timid spouse reading list ...this is both meant tongue in cheek and all light hearted ...but not really for some of us..

For those of us concerned that one wrong book could set back gains made by our beloved spouses that are warming up to the Idea of a cruising lifestyle we don't need any Negative Nellie's whispering in there ears...

I know there is value in knowing what can happen its just not needed to be sailing 101 reading...She will have the ban lifted the first time she hollers back at the sea......" Is that all you got"...

Scott, that may take a while..., the yelling back part. Fredia is determined to cruise despite the fact that she's scared of "Big Water" as she puts it and was positively terrified during that gale she sailed through with me. However, time makes the bad memories fade some and she's still ready to go.

Jaws will forever be indelibly etched on my mind. I have major drowning phobias, so anything to do with that is scary.

And if that doesnt kill me, I will live till I die.

A Voyage for Madmen

Great book, but kind of a laundry list of what can go wrong, physically and psychologically.

Don't remember the name of the book (perhaps I am trying to block the memory of it), but a guy from our marina gave it to us to read. It was about six sailboats that were travelling somewhere North of New Zealand and none of the weather forecast people were able to predict that huge storm created by the collission of two fronts so those boats headed into it. The book tracks in parallel what happened on each of the sailboats and it is absolutelly horrific. The events were recreated from survivors' stories and radio communications between involved parties.

I guess what scared me about it is the fact that in today's day and age, with all the technology available to us, a storm of that magnitude could not be predicted, people died and the ones that survived it are marked forever.

OH NO!!! I bought her that one...She has started reading it already....

Sailingmonica...PLEASE remember the name I don't event want to read that one..

This one almost as bad...so I am going to add one of my own..."Left for Dead' a recount of a fist hand experience of the 79 Fastnet race...don't need her envisioning herself having conversations with my dead corps lying in the cockpit for days...

Found it, Stillraining, it's called "Rescue in the Pacific - A True Story of Disaster and Survival in a Force 12 Storm" by Tony Farrington.

Available on Amazon for $12, if you want a gift for someone you don't like.
