Well, ol' Farley was known is some (petty) circles as "Hardly Knowit". That was possibly tongue in cheek, but by his own admission he NEVER let the facts get in the way of a good story :-)!

As an intelligence hossifer towards the end of WWII he set "the establishment" butt over teakettle by gathering together some rather luvverly pieces of captured Hunnish artillery with the aim of shipping it all back to Canada as prizes. He got stomped, but the tale is quintessentially Farley.

Overboard, the book

Overboard by Hank Searls — Reviews, Discussion, Bookclubs, Lists

also don't let your spouse/partner read this if you're trying to encourage them to cruise with you.

"All is Lost," gets my vote as I certainly felt that way as I watched it. First movie I was hoping the sea would win.

Re: Books and Movies NOT to take on a Voyage

Great posts! I'm probably going to get some grief about this, but I had a hard time with Life Aquatic With Steve Zissou. I bought thinking it would be a great boat movie and then ditched it after the first viewing though maybe I should have given it another chance. Whaddya think?

You should read the book its taken from and you will realise the movie is crap. The battles in this book make me want to go back in time and board ships

"And the Sea Will Tell", great book, true story written by Vincent Bugliosi, of "Helter Skelter" fame. Scary as hell, even more so because it actually happened.

Re: Books and Movies NOT to take on a Voyage

"And the Sea Will Tell," as mentioned above, is the (or at least "a") reason my wife will not (absolutely not) sail with me if I plan to go anywhere but to another US mainland port or Avalon on Catalina Island off the coast of California. She will not even go to any of Catalina's other mooring fields or anchorages, or Santa Cruz Island. Before she read the book she was more or less OK, and had at least agreed on a sail to South America and on to the South Pacific. No more.
