Boats in the Movies

I loved the movies "Captain Ron" with Martin Short and "Summer rental" with fellow Canadian actor John Candy. Both were sailing movies, both featured a hapless straight man, and both were taught to sail by a stereotypical crusty-salty dog-of a sailor much loved by Hollywood. Both also involved the restoration of an old wooden sailing vessel, one of them a floating seafood restaurant.
In "Captain Ron" Martin Short plays a character who inherits an old dilapidated wooden boat, lying, I think in the Carribean, who then hires a delivery skipper, Kurt Russel, to help them sail the boat home so they can sell it. The hard drinking Captain Ron wears an eye patch over either eye, as the mood strikes, sets sail with the family on the adventures and misadventures, and when they finally get home, they decide the seafaring life is actually the life thet want, so, as they are almost docked, they turn the boat around and head for more adventures. (and misadventures.)
So many beautiful yachts have been in the movies. remember that great little sloop in "The Truman show?" Anyone know that boat? There's a lot of California boaters on this site, I bet there's a lot of people who know boats featured in movies or television, and the stories behind them. I saw the "Black Pearl" in Honolulu this spring, but have no idea who built her, or how. Any stories to tell?

Owner of one of the Capt Ron boats is a member here. do a search and you will find his reports on the boat. A formosa I think.... In Texas maybe?

In the filming of Dove they used a number of boats, Ranger 23s, some still down under, but one of them back in so cal I think.

Re: boats in the movies

Key Largo, Humphrey Bogart. The film ends with a fight on a great old motor cruiser. Bogey was a passionate lifelong sailor, and I think the boat in the film was named after his sailing boat.

Or Casino Royale (the more recent version). They sail into Venice on a Spirit 54, which is a beautiful yacht.

Not to mention Stirling Hayden, for whom movie stardom made an inconvenient and irksome demand upon his time which could be better spent sailing. His book Wanderer makes for an interesting read.

Re: boats in the movies

I believe the vessel in The Truman show was a friendship sloop. What I would like to know is what was the boat in dead calm? that has to be my favorite sail boat I would love to see it.

Re: boats in the movies

Does anyone know what happened to the Disco Volante from the movie Thunderball? It was docked at Watson Island in Miami for several years after the movie was made but I can't find out what happened to it after leaving Miami.

Don't forget Mama Mia and that beautiful Concordia Yawl. My wife almost booked a trip to Greece the night we watched that movie. Great sailing shots!

Re: boats in the movies

How about The Thomas Crown Affair? Not too many movies with scenes of modern boats in them. I like when he capsizes the cat on purpose...

Re: boats in the movies

I thought 'Dead Calm' had some neat scenes, but a bit far fetched at times. Nice yacht for sure.

I forgot to ask if anyone knows anything about the beautiful yacht sailed by Dennis Quaid in the remake of "Yours, Mine, and Ours."

Or how about Polanski's "Knife in the Water"?

A sailing movie classic by one of the greats, even if he is a creep...
