First of all I am glad everyone is OK and we only bent a boat.

It's hell to second guess your self and BS to be second guessed by an armchair sailor halfway around the world but aren't there some lessons here?

Now come on, boatman should have been fine there if the dock had not failed. But we have to blame the Monkey and all the talk of food. Boatman only had access to beer and sausage for food. The more pics of crabs and talk of fried bananas he saw the more he was motivated to go. After all Atoll has a salad girl! How does that stack up?

No warning of surge.. was aware of the storm but.. one assumes the lifeboat mooring would be as safe as anywhere.. or is that being dumb..
Why did I leave the Kanal.. only allowed 4 nights in the 10euro dock by the locks.. only so many places one can go with a 3metre draft.. and Cuxhaven was the nearest.

Boatman you don't need to justify your judgement. You was there during all the necessary decision making as most of us were sitting at home and should not attempt to make your decisions you had to make. I'm sure many had to be made on the spur of the moment with the best you could do.....gotta act Now.....coulda been far worse than it was........You did Good.....

No kidding on the bad luck with the lifeboat mooriong failing.

And the 4 night limit at the locks explains a lot.

They were there when I first visited about almost 30 years ago. Surprised the bejesus out of me, but the explanation I got was that coconuts float up the Gulf Stream, and the remnants of it keep western Ireland warm enough to grow them. The Gulf Stream does keep it warmer, so it makes some sense.

My great-grandmother often told my mother about the Palm trees in County Cork. I checked that out for myself several years ago on a visit to the ancestral village. This is on the south end of the Emerald Isle, but I think Great-Grandma emigrated in the 1890s, so Ireland has had Palm trees for a long time.
