pirate Re: Boatman's Latest Adventure

Was chatting to a guy here.. Jan Hamester.. Open 60's racer who knows the boat from a few years back.. seems the original owner I met in AEro who said I was crazy trying to cross the Atlantic nearly sank her in a F7 off N France with waves coming over the decks.. Hmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm
But.. she still had two cockpits and lots to flood.. now theres only the little one at the back.. the rest has been decked over so..
Not the best spot to be stuck for a few days so am debating making a run W tomorrow.. right out then tack back in toward Belgium then run the Straits with a beam reach...
But then again maybe not.. see what PW says in the am.. high waters 10am so plenty of time to decide..

Like what I see... making my run tomorrow.. high is 10am-ish so go through around 0900... get a lovely broad/beam reach on the S'ly to get me right out there in the open come dark..
She was doing 7-8kts in 12-15 wind so hoping to cover some ground before it swings SW..

even at 7-8 it is still a two and a half day sail in a straight line!,Monday- Tuesday looks ok ish for dover, still on the nose but light.

Wednesday you really don't want to be out there! big gales.

maybe look into going into Harwich",the quay" next to the RNLI, is deep enough for you if it is taking longer than planned.

Re: Boatman's Latest Adventure

Harwich, tis ok, some nice little pubs that might even sell IPA !
Just watch the wake from the ferry, it nearly put us on the pontoon when we were there last year.
But I recon you have missed the gap , I recon Alex knows best

Hope you have a good one which ever you choose.
Ps. Get some marshmallows for the wood fire, you could go all romantic cuddled up with your crew

Boaty,
You are a braver man than most of us to even be thinking of going off in that stuff. It looks scary. Is the owner and his family along for this leg and this weather?

the wind tells one story, but what I have found in that area and the English channel is to look at the wave forcast, which gives a better picture of actual conditions.

getting your tides right is also very important in that area and greatly effects sea conditions in any wind over 15-20 knots, wind over tide can get quite nasty quite quickly with the 2-4 knot currents in the area

sailing great britain offshore waters thames wave heights + 36 utc
