Boat Work in Cuba
Yes, we are American and noted in older posts that in theory it is illegal to spend money in Cuba.
However, we are still curious if any Americans on the forum went to Cuba in the last year or two and had any boat work done there. If so, what was your experience regarding cost and quality of work? Have you returned to the US since visiting Cuba? If so, were there any issues regarding your re-entry into the US?
We are considering getting a bottom job done there (scrape and re-apply anti-fouling hull paint).
I do realize this question post is likely to stir a hornet's nest of all the "you should nots" from US cruisers who haven't sailed to Cuba. It would be great to hold off and hear from those who have been there. I'm betting they're out there....
We haven't gone to Cuba but are considering it. I like the idea of going there before there's a McDonald's and Starbucks (etc).
Thanks!

I don't think , on a open forum, anyone will admit breaking the law, having their boat seized, and be fined or jailed. Just my thoughts!

Re: boat work in Cuba?
Play it safe and have your boat work done in Mexico, to cut cost. Bring with you ALL the supplies you'll need, especially PETIT anti-fouling bottom paint; around $180 USD/gallon. It is foolish to play a game of chickens with Immigration/Dept. of State. Cuba is banned for US citizens as a tourist destination; heed the advice. If for any reason you get yourself into trouble, there'll be no one to blame but yourself; no one to bail you out, either.

We met cruisers there from the USA. No consequences, as far as we know.
Not going to name them here, nor in a PM.
Do what you like,
But stay away from the country that has the laws with which you do not agree. Stay away from the country whose laws you break. Does that mean you stay away from Cuba or USA????

Re: boat work in Cuba?
Why would you pick Cuba for boat work? You'd have to bring everything you need with you and the marinas are not known for being that cheap.
Visiting Cuba is another story. We have friends on 3 US boats who went this year and really enjoyed it.

Re: Boat Work in Cuba
See my post a bit further down the list. Proposed visit to Cuba.
It doesn't specifically cover boat work, but it might give you more of a feel for a visit to Cuba. Mainly for our US visa status we decided to give the place a miss.
If you have to carry all your supplies, either to Cuba or Mexico, how much is it going to cost, and how long, to get there from Jacksonville? Surely you can find some local who will do the work where you are.

go to Cuba to enjoy the people, music, culture, and beauty.

Re: Boat Work in Cuba
There is a travelift at marina Hemingway. Looks like most boat on the hard there were possibly confiscated by government. I would be very wary of hauling my boat in Cuba or even leaving it overnight as an American. Canadians leave there boats long term and fly back and forth to Canada, etc. they would have diplomatic support if they had issues "we" wouldn't.
Overall, I post AGAIN I think Cuba is VERY OVERRATED as a destination and not worth the hassles.

Re: Boat Work in Cuba
Thanks, all. Seems like the big take-away is there's better places for boat work, and for those willing to take the risk, they may find it an interesting cultural stop.
Appreciate the insight, if not the insults.
