Boat Registration - International Silliness

Does it make sense to register a boat in only the Captan's name or in both the Cap'n and Admiral's name?

Any difference in clearing in/out?

Additional insured issues?

What if one of us croaked in let's say Turkey, could the other one clear out etc...

I'm not a lawyer or estate tax adviser... But my research when we had Raptor Dance built was that it was best to list you both as co-owners.

All our documentation is list with both my wife, Mary and I as co-owners. The title lists us both as "Community Property". Depending on your state of residence, you could also list as "Joint Tenants with Right of Survivorship".

We've had no problems in 10,000 miles of cruising, and only one of us needs to go into check us in or out.

Makes life much easier.

We've also not had any insurance issues.

We also list ourselves on our Crew List (required in most countries), both as Captain.

Regards,
Bill

Aloha Bill,
Is yours a documented vessel or a state registered vessel?
Just curious.

USCG Documented 1107048.

That we're USCG documented and not State Registered does seem to make a positive difference cruising (insurance, checking in, etc).

Cheers,
Bill

As the survivor waves goodbye to the customs flunkie, just smile and say that, in America, "Possession is 9/10ths of the law."

I suppose you could give them an address if you wanted the body sent home, or, if your freezer has sufficient capacity . . .

Unfortunately, most countries have Navies!

Unraveling the paperwork mess when the only registered owner dies IS a big deal.

How is she listed on the Crew List that you check in with?

In Turkey you need : Boats Original Paper Like the British Blue book, Insurance, and if the owner is not on board a Power of Attorney with a Turkish translation of the lawers paper. The name should be exactly spelt like in the passport. you need to purchase a TRANSIT LOG for sailing in Turkey for 3 months , including ALL the crew inc those that shall arrive by plane, and to write down all the ports you wish to visit. it costs $ 40.- and can take up to 4 hours to arrange. you can get a local guy to do the paperwork for you for $20. News on Turkey. The "Logg" now lasts for one year and you can keep your boat there for 5 years , renewable.
PS Some marinas carry this out for free ( A tip will be expected)

Thanks everyone, it sounds like it just might be best to register the boat in boat name. That's what we are going to do.
