Boat Names...How'd You Come Up with Yours ?

what's the origin of your boat's name? Just curious

It was harder to name our boats than our kids. We came up with Slowdance because that was our first dance on our first date 35 (wow) years ago. Still sailing & slow dancing after all these years. "Blow Me" made the short list, but we decided the bridge tenders and race committee might not see the humor in it.

AURORA is named after the often forgotten second boat on the famous Shackelton expedition. While Shackton was fighting to survive after the Endurance was crushed. The crew of the Aurora continued to set caches from the other side. Many died laying caches which unknown to them would never be needed.


My boat is named in honor of these brave and often forgotten men.

Previous owners first launched her in April so they chose April Lass as a name for her. We both liked th name which seems to suite the yacht so kept it. 3 years on we still send the POs post cards of our trips and they send us Christmas cards.

When I purchased my boat I read something about being bad luck to change a boats name. Then I read some long ritual on how to safely change a boats name. It all sounded complicated and too hard. (All anecdotal I'm sure.)

Anyway, my boat is called Rhino. It is made of steel and grey in color so I guess it suits.

As the third owner, my boat had two names when I bought her. Tachyon on the transom and Second Star on the side but taped over. Initially I didn't care for either, but after a little research, found Second Star came from Peter Pan, "Second Star to the right and on til morning", which grew on me after awhile. All traces of Tachyon were removed and she reverted to her original name.

My boat had no known name when I got it. Because it was the very last Pacific Dolphin made, "Grand Finale" seemed fitting.

I dated a girl who was infatuated with my hairless bum and once after rubbing it she commented it was "smooth like Suede". She liked telling the story to friends and, not wanting to miss the opportunity to rib me, eventually the nickname Suede stuck. Seemed fitting to choose "Suede" as a boat name...

Our daughter, Hylynn, aka "Hy", has been the "highlight" of our family, hebce "HyLyte".

FWIW...

PS: Subsequently, the dinghy, which she drives at breath-taking speeds at times, is known as "FlashLyte"; and, of course, her car is "StreetLyte", etc...
