Boat Name Poll

What do you think of the name "Ruah" (or "Ruach") as a boat name. I don't intend to explain it or give my thoughts at this stage, I just want you first impression please.

The background is that I have trying to come up with a new boat name for the last 7 years of my refit and I am launching (fingers crossed) just before Christmas so I need to sort out soon .

I have considered many many names but only this one seems to fit; BUT I keep having occasional second thoughts about it. This is where you come in...

Thanks for taking the time to vote

Think you forgot to add something!

IMHO, there is only one criteria of importance to outsiders about boat names - can the coastguard/rescue organisations understand what you are saying.

I don't like it. Negative vibes on Ruah and Ruach is too close to roach...

Sorry, I believe If you have to say how it is pronounced you'll probably be spelling it out to every CGsman, bridge, and lock tender you come across. Having said that I have been asked to spell the name of my boat "GUMBO" even on the Gulf Coast!
Sorry again, "Ruah" (or "Ruach") kinda brings Raunchy to my mind.

But it is your boat if Ruah has a special meaning to you, go for it!

I once saw a boat named Zubenelgenubi, try getting that across to New Orleans bridge and lock tenders it'll be a long trip through. By the way it is the name of a star.

If in doubt, Google...

Never having heard "Ruah" or "Ruach", I consulted my friend, Mr. Google.

Yes! I think either would be a very appropriate name for a boat. Of the two, I favor "Ruah".

Sounds like a fine name.

Might want to think about :Humuhumunukunukuapua, as a backup.

Cubic hours of anticipated explaination as to meaning, spelling steered me away from my original first choice "Sha'uri" (the role played by the lovely Israeli actress Mili Avital in the Stargate movie), to "Berzerker", which still takes explanation. But you get massive points for creativity.

I named my first sailboat Duggans Dew. My first name is Doug, my initials are d.e.w. , but that's not why I came up with that name - anyone tell me where it came from?

I think boat names are a very personal thing. Name her as you please.

Personal opinion is that Ruach will be mispronounced roach and you will be known as the roach coach. Some thoughts:

- Don't pick a name you have to explain too much - Although the name is personal you will get tired after the 1,000th time you explain it.
- The crew will be known by the boat name - for some reason you won't be Bob anymore, you will be the roaches or heaven forbid the cockroach's
- Pick a name that everyone can pronounce and comes across clearly on the radio

However, it is your boat and the name Ruah does much better than Ruach.

I think I know the translation to the name Ruah, and it is a wonderful name (once you translate it), otherwise... interesting. Again if you like it go for it. You may end up meeting a lot of folks that way, once they ask you the meaning of it, which is not a bad thing.

Thanks for all the comments so far .

For the record and as I understand it, both "Ruah" and "Ruach" are pronounced the same way - Roo-ark and the difference in meaning is somewhat subtle and depends a bit on what you take as your reference source.

If only Gord was here to provide some deeper research into all this
