My list of really want to have (must have, necessary, or ???), more or less in the order of priority.

1. A real bed that I don't have to assemble from a table, settee or any other furniture and a private cabin for the bed and the cabin is not the forepeak aka sail locker, general storage room and roller coaster ride under way.

2. A good galley including stove with oven and fridge.

3. A real shower, not a convertible bathroom. Sure cockpit or deck showers are fine but occasionally not the best option like when it's cold or you're tied up at a fancy marina. Hot water, yes but I can get by with moderate quantities of water, hot and otherwise.

4. Clothes washer would be nice but just don't see room for one without going a good bit bigger than my current boat.

Living on the US Gulf Coast, I would unequivocally say that AC has been a considerable luxury and I sure miss it when it isn't working.

A quality mattress is also a very nice thing to have.

Yes a good mattress makes all the difference, up there as a necessity in my mind. Mine is OK as we have the Froli underneath and a memory foam topper, but I do want a good mattress.

Have far less experience than others here, and am not sure where you're sailing, but in places where I'm likely to find myself: cabin heat when you need it.

Sailorboy you say you live in the north east - northeast where? as location has a lot of sway on boat luxury decisions. Went we went to Alaska I considered boat heating an essential but here in Australia it is a luxury for southern sailing. I love my bread maker - it saves a lot of wrist work. AIS is no longer a luxury as our seas get more crowded I consider it a must have. Again it depends on where you plan to cruise, in the tropics some say an airconditioner is a must have, but we have not installed one. What is a luxury to one crew is not to another. Mull over the options and plan purchases together - keeping each other happy is the way to smooth cruising.

I currently live in NH and keep the boat in MA. My long term plan about heat is to keep moving south as needed. Since I retire in 3 months I feel I can accomplish this.

I don't consider a good mattress a luxury, I consider that a MUST. Last year I got a good 6" foam gel queen size unit for $239 off Amazon. It isn't a perfect fit for my boat as the top on my main berth is angled a little larger. But for the $400 savings over a custom job a couple of pillows fill the extra space fine. I may get another and double them up as currently I have the new one on top of the old inner spring mattress.

Not a joke and, as much as I hate to admit it, not totally silly to have. My wife has lovely, long hair and after she washes it can take a while to dry. In cool weather it can give her quite a chill, maybe lead to colds or flu so she wouldn't be able to cook, wash dishes and scrub the cabin sole.

I do keep a heat gun on board for various boat jobs like softening hoses, shrinking electrical shrink tube, stripping varnish and such. I think it would make a fine hair dryer as well so would comply with the boat philosophy of multiple uses for every tool.

My luxuries list:

1. as per OP: plenty of water (hot, if sailing out of the tropics),
2. proper shower stall usable in most sea states,
3. cool storage for vegetables and dairy,
4. hull insulation (heat, cold, noises),
5. proper light winds sails,
6. proper cockpit protection (hard dodger, dog house, etc.)
7. state of the art windvane,
8. oversize, quality AP,
9. new, quality engine,

One short of sounding too religious!

10. the Internet.

I also feel good internet is a great luxury for the boat. So far in my research the "plenty of hot water" project is less expensive than the internet one.

For me it would be a full cockpit enclosure like this one, but I want it to have all screens.

Mosquitos love me and here on the east coast of the U.S. I find that it is impossible for me to enjoy the cockpit in the evenings at dock without drenching myself in DEET which I really hate.

As soon as all the necessities are taken care of this is the first luxury item on my list.
