Boat Insurance - YES, NO, Maybe

Narrowing down on buying my first boat, probably 30 - 38 feet, cruiser, used, 30k-40k price range, 1980-1999.

Will be overnight and fun sailing in PNW for x-number of years.

Should I avoid comprehensive insurance?

I will probably get a certain amount of Liability (how much?)

Anyone want to jump in on which companies might be the best, and which ones to avoid all together? thanks

Re: Boat Insurance - YES, NO, Maybe

The question you have to answer is what happens to you and your life if the boat is lost?

If the fiscal loss would be devastating then you need the coverage. If you think your life would go on pretty much undisturbed, or at least be satisfactory to you, then you don't.

We have never had comprehensive insurance on our cruising boats but do carry third party coverage. We could survive boat loss, but not the kind of claim that could result from environmental damage or long term medical care for an injured person.

Also where you keep it may require insurance.
