Boat in distress off of San Francisco?

Today on the television news and the radio I heard of a boat that the Coast Guard was trying to reach 350 miles off of San Francisco, that was damaged yesterday in heavy weather. There are reports of 3 injuries and damage to the boat. It was reported as a 70 foot boat involved in a race. I had not heard of a race this early in the spring. I live 100 miles north of San Francisco, in the mountains and can verify that Friday night and Saturday morning we had very high winds and heavy rains. It must have been much worse off shore. The news didnt say much, and dont seem to be mentioning it now. Does anyone know more about it?____Grant.

Re: Boat in distress off of San Francisco?

Haven't heard much, I heard that they were in a RTW race and coming from somewhere around the Phillopines. They were not very experinced racers and that they were running in heavy weather and broachedd serveral times. there are injuries on board and the CG made an air drop w/ medical supplies. They tried earlier w/ a helo, but had to turn back. That's all I have..Michael..

Clipper RTW with a fair smattering of amateur crew doing the big adventure. The yachts are extremely strong, very well built, I know the builder and he was very very understanding of what the boats were going to do through their life.

Apparently getting launched around and across these 68 foot boats is pretty common.

I'll stick to hitting myself in the head with bricks...

Re: Boat in distress off of San Francisco?

That explains the race question. As I said before, the weather was truly nasty in California , so I expect it was horrible off shore. Racing puts you on the edge, but that is pretty scary._____Grant.
