Boat hauling

Cheapest way to get a 25'er hauled across country? (TO to Van)
Getting quotes from 98 hun to 25 grand(!).
Boat is only worth 9500 +/- so.......
Was hoping to find hauler who would otherwise be empty coming this way who'd be willing to haul cheap.
That ever happen?

Re: Boat hauling

What type of boat and does it have a trailer?

If you have a trailer, could you find a buddy with a full size pickup, you could borrow for a couple weeks? But really, 4000miles at 10 MPG...that's 400 gal of gas or about $1000 not counting the return trip. Add in a weeks time for the driver, insurance, oil change and some depreciation and $10k is right about what you should expect.

Really it's probably more cost effective to sell it at a big discount and then buy another in the destination.

Re: Boat hauling

most trucks do a lot better than 10 mpg. i hauled a 23' sailboat with a V6 no problem. but if it doesn't have a trailer then forget about it.

Sailboat with no trailer...borrowing a truck goes out the window.
Now you are likely looking at a commercial guy who has a suitable trailer.

Unless there is something really special about the boat, you are going to be better off buying locally.

And yes, 10mpg would be a good starting estimate for towing. You might beat it by a little but not likely with a gas truck. Diesel trucks get a bit better but cost about $10k more up front for the engine so they will jack up the depreciation, so it's really a wash.

PS: did those figures include pulling the mast, haul out and reversing the process at the other end? Could easily add a couple grand more to the cost.

Re: Boat hauling

Depends on beam, you may need permits from all states you go through. I found very reasonable one x-country $12,800 for 30’ boat. You can find maybe around $5000 but not sure how reliable.
That’s 4years agi and I decided to give up that boat. I don’t think 25’ boat may not need permit. Buy a trailer and tow it by yourself is the cheapest way.
