1. Incompetent individuals tend to overestimate their own level of skill,

None of these characteristics are limited to men.

I saw that a long time ago.

Very interesting to see again. Thanks.

Anti-intellectualism demonstrates hostility towards and mistrust of intellect, intellectuals, and intellectual pursuits, usually expressed as the derision of education, philosophy, literature, art, and science, as impractical and contemptible.

An intellectual isn’t necessarily someone more intelligent, or with more knowledge than the norm (although IMHO, they’re more likely to be both). It just means that the person highly values the mind, thinking, and the pursuit of knowledge.

And it’s frightening, to me, how few intellectuals I personally know.

Anti-intellectuals (people who deride the mind, who pride themselves on not thinking, on not using their reason), on the other hand, are everywhere.

The problem is not just in the things we do not know; it's the alarming number of people who have smugly concluded that they do not need to know such things in the first place.

Yea man.

I sort of go back and forth, depending on the issue.

So, yeah I guess my biggest irritant is the P.O.

And someday YOU will be the accursed PO. Try to do good work.

A few days ago I went to replace the foot switch on the windlass. The PO had simply twisted the wires together and taped it up. The factory electrical work on this boat was meticulous, the PO's... not so much. And he was an electrical engineer!

Egads!!

But.

How long were they twisted and taped before they failed. Or did they not fail and you needed to disconnect for some other reason?

Re: Biggest Irritant ?

I converted to electric propulsion four years ago and that solved all my engine problems. Now my biggest irritant is lines and other items like an electric cord that get caught on a cleat when I need them to run free. Of course the other irritant is when I need a line to be caught by a cleat like the line to a runaway dingy and it does not get caught up in the cleat.

And my biggest irritant? Prolly all those Engineers standing around discussing how best to do something I already figured out hours or days ago...

Not this time.

But if you have not expereinced overheating, arcing, intermitant conections, or corrosion from this sort of sloppyness, you've been quite lucky. It is a signifigant fire hazard because of the high probablity of a high resistence or arcing connection. No excuse, ever.

In actuality, your assumed common sense, may not be as sensible as you believe. See the research, and the first 3 conclusions.
