Re: big performance cruising cat capsizes
I’m not surprised as virtually all photos of them underway on the internet show them lifting a hull - hardly appropriate for a ‘cruising cat’, IMO. No doubt the designer and builder refer to cruising as well as performance in order to increase sales, but really?

No, the owner and the builder see the boat as a performance cruiser that would be used for cruising and to do some racing:

The boat will be towed and recovered but a very unfortunate situation for owner of an almost new sailboat. I hope all goes well with the boat recovery. I wish him the best of luck and I can only imagine what he should be feeling

Re: big performance cruising cat capsizes
Polux, I still think any cat designed to fly a hull is NOT appropriate for and should not be confused with a cruising cat, except perhaps by those who wish to denigrate the stability of cruising cats in general.

Re: big performance cruising cat capsizes
lets face it, americans really do not know about cats. Too many capsizes and failed projects.
My advice : stick with monohulls.

Re: big performance cruising cat capsizes
Almost any boat raced can be capzised if pushed beyond a certain limit.
I'm pretty sure if you sail Fujin conservative and responsibly in cruising mode she is pretty seaworthy and save.
If you race you are sometimes making a conscious decision to push past a limit, and that can go wrong.
Nothing wrong with that if you are aware of your decisions.
Capsizing is not always and automatically a design or build flaw.
Neither is it automatically a factor to quantify sea worthiness.
Even on designs pushing the envelope.

They are all performance cruising cats and they are all flying a hull.
Flying a hull or not on a performance cruising cat, if there is enough wind, it is a question of the sail the sailors decide to carry.
If they were sailing with less sail they would not being flying a hull.

Re: big performance cruising cat capsizes
Polux, you nailed it with the last phrase. It's a choice. And it depends on if you want to win a race and take risks or if you want to arrive safe and sail accordingly.
