Re: Best Sailing Dingy Build Kit?

Not so much a kit just plans. B and B yacht design has a couple good smaller prams to build under 8'. The cats paw with sail, two paw a nester which I have and also the mini paw (no sail) which I built two winters ago at 6'-6"'. The mini is an easy stitch and glue build, tows or stows easily on my 32 Islander and also carries two average adults. I built mine for around $350 includes okume plywood, fiberglass and paint used porch and deck polyurathane. (that could start a fight) One thing to keep in mind is towing verses stowing. Good luck and I can't think of a better father son project.

Which ever design you choose, you'll have a lot of fun.
I've just started cutting wood for my next build. It's a strange little folding boat called a Flip Tail. I'm building the 9 foot version. I don't know what I'll do with it, but I'll enjoy the build.

You get what you pay for. Things like quality sails and a standard all carbon fiber rig don't come cheap.

Re: Best Sailing Dingy Build Kit?

Does the Chameleon kit include CNC machined foils? I've yet to see even a link to one.

They are really very different designs, apples and oranges.

Bob Perry raves about the PT11 in a magazine article.

Re: Best Sailing Dingy Build Kit?

Note that the PT11 kit, with all options including the sail rig, is $1,990.00. The price quoted above is for a finished boat.

The price I quoted was for the kit, not the completed boat. They have many options that they say they recommend everybody take (like a waterproof hatch for the foredeck). In the worksheet you linked to, I just took their recommended options and added them up.

I also took the sailing rig as part of the cost since that's what the thread is all about. The sailing rig alone is another $1990.

The only option that wouldn't be included in the chameleon is the rubber bumper, so we can say the PT11 kit is $4700 once you get all the non-optional options.

The price of the chameleon came from Chameleon. The chameleon is plans only, but the $900 includes the designer's estimate of material cost. His estimate of hours to build is actually lower than for the PT11 kit, but I would never really trust the build time estimate on any of these things.

So, in the sense that you get more fancy hardware and a pre-cut kit, then yes, these things are different. But the end result is very similar. I think it's totally fair to say that one costs $900 and the other $4700, but for the first you need to use a jig saw to cut your own plywood. Some would see that as worth nearly $4000.

I have seen no reviews of the Chameleon's sailing performance. Certainly, the videos of the PT11's performance are very impressive! Anybody done any sailing in their Chameleons and care to share?

Re: Best Sailing Dingy Build Kit?

I'm working on a new dingy design to put on my schooner. It will be built using Yellow Cedar strip plank construction. I will make a nesting option model also.

I like that you designed it in Catia. I have been using NX9 for all my CAD work.

Cool,

yeah I have never used NX, I hear that it can a good program for surfacing. I like Catia because it gives you lots of options to edit surfaces, but can become complicated compared to other programs.
