Any recommendations for good accurate guides for this route -

CA to Marquesas to Tahiti to Cook Islands to Tonga to Opua NZ?

Re: Best Pacific Crossing Guides?

I have the Pacific Crossing Guide. I know Charles Charts makes some guides. Also, World Cruising Routes.

Re: Best Pacific Crossing Guides?

We referenced Charlie's Charts a bit even though they're getting a bit dated. The Pacific Crossing Guide was ok but in the end we didn't use it a lot. Cornell's World Cruising Routes was handy for crossing info, but not much in the islands.

We ended up using Soggy Paws and Mister John's .pdf cruising guides much more.

You can find them online on Soggy Paws website. S/V Soggy Paws - Useful Files and Links

Re: Best Pacific Crossing Guides?

Get the Moon guide for whatever countries you want. They are better than the Lonely Planet equivalent. Back that up with Clay's book.

All of the other Pacific cruising books are wayyyyyy out of date. e.g. the book by Hinz was written around 40 years ago.

Go to the Latitude38.com site. They sponsor an annual "Pacific Puddlejumpers" event that is really not an event but just a way to get sailors together and share resources. I think they have a lot of good info on the site and references to more detailed guides there.

There are a number of good guides but two stand out:

1- the old standby is Jimmy Cornell's "World Cruising Routes"
2- An excellent and recently revised guide is, "The Pacific Crossing Guide" by Michael Pococ with revision by Ros Hogbin.

I agree both Soggy Paws and Mister John's are well thought of and we have been using the Soggy Paws Marquesas Guide for the past 8 months.

We also use Lonely Planet to give us a picture for land travel.

You also may want to put a similar question out on the Yahoo Pacific Puddle Jump Group. (not PPJ by Lat38)

Re: Best Pacific Crossing Guides?

With world weather changing so dramatically of late, your best guide/routing info will be found from those who have most recently proceeded you on your route. Ask specific questions regarding each leg you are contemplating from those who have recently made those voyages and ask for info regarding the beurocracies ahead as these too are in flux.

Re: Best Pacific Crossing Guides?

There are a number of cruising guides available:
South Pacific Anchorages, Warwick Clay
Charlie's Charts of Polynesia, Wood
Landfalls of Paradise, Hinz, Howard
Guide to Navigation and Tourism in French Polynesia, Bonnette

The first 3 are OK for some pre-planning but not very useful on a day to day basis. The Guide to Nav in FP is very good for the Marquesas, Tuamotus and Societies. It is available in French and English. The English version is harder to find. The pictures also make it a coffee table book.

As others have said, The Soggypaws compendium is a good reference and has some good details. In the season, the anchorages listed can be crowded as everyone else is looking at the same coordinates.
