Best navigation system

I just got my Furuno navigation system and it works like a charm. We can't wait to cross Lake Okeechobee and test it out for a long stretch.

We have 1,000's of members in the northern hemisphere waiting to get out on a long stretch right now. Best of luck with the first trip.

Ain't that the truth. The marina still has 16 inches of ice in it and the river is not navigable with ice.

I have started using 'SEACLEAR' on my laptop and have found it's great. The cost of a GPS antenna was $90.00 and the down load for Seaclear was free, thats all I have invested other than the laptop. The charts are free from NOAA and I have downloaded 300 charts. Hard to beat the price.
Has anyone else used Seaclear?

I do use Seaclear on my computer and like it for what it does for me, but it is strictly secondary to the paper charts where I keep a DR plot. When near coastal I actually plot fixes. I find keeping a DR plot helps keep me aware of currents that I would miss if I was just video game piloting.

Am I a luddite or what?

You might want to read the thread on Seaclear, and continue any related posts there.

(avoids diverting the current thread to a different topic)

I'm going to be installing Furuno's NavNet 3D onboard after the hardware is available towards the end of this month. I can't wait to have it up and running.

I don't think there really is one best navigation system. It all depends on your budget and your needs. A small skiff, a power boat, a small sailboat, a large sailboat, a workboat and a ship are all going to need different systems.
