I have started using 'SEACLEAR' on my laptop and have found it's great. The cost of a GPSantenna was $90.00 and the down load for Seaclear was free, thats all I have invested other than the laptop. The charts are free from NOAA and I have downloaded 300 charts. Hard to beat the price.
Has anyone else used Seaclear?
You can't drown a man thats destined to hang!!!
I do use Seaclear on my computer and like it for what it does for me, but it is strictly secondary to the paper charts where I keep a DR plot. When near coastal I actually plot fixes. I find keeping a DR plot helps keep me aware of currents that I would miss if I was just video game piloting.
I'm going to be installing Furuno's NavNet 3D onboard after the hardware is available towards the end of this month. I can't wait to have it up and running.
I don't think there really is one best navigation system. It all depends on your budget and your needs. A small skiff, a power boat, a small sailboat, a large sailboat, a workboat and a ship are all going to need different systems.
