Re: Barometer Recomendations

This is what we use:

It is a really nice, no frills, digital recording barometer. You can order from the UK direct for around US$200.

Re: Barometer Recomendations

Since I sail other people's boats, I also wear a Casio Protrek watch with a barometer and trend bar.

Re: Barometer Recomendations

This has been cheap (because it's sold to hikers, not sailors!) and very reliable. I didn't wear a watch before I got this, and the compass works fine on the steel boat if I hold it five feet off the deck. I must look at the baro trend twice a day.

Re: Barometer Recomendations

I have a garmin etrex vista handheld gps that has a barometer built in. It charts the pressure and allows you to look back at 4 days of history. I have it mounted at the nav station with the charger plugged in.

They're going for about $160, plus it's also a chart plotting gps

Re: Barometer Recomendations

That's the sort of thing I'd throw in the ditch bag, or take in the dinghy "stuff box".

Re: Barometer Recomendations

Whatever you do, don't buy an expensive analog barometer--we have a Chelsea which came with the boat, and when the pressure gets less than 995 mb it makes a precipitous drop of 10-15 more mb in one second...junk!
