Re: Australia Day Beer Special

Maybe that is why Toyota named one of their cars after it. It was in the same mould as the beer. Cheap, bland, average in every way and did not make you want another one.

Unhappy Re: Australia Day Beer Special

I know a few Ozzies here and have heard about their disdain for Fosters. The ad campaign must be successful because you can buy it everywhere. That is the only (non) Australian made beer commonly available in the US. There are many Ozzie wines though and Yellow Tail is real common. On a side note, the NZ beer Steinlager is also available. English and Irish brews are popular here. I think Samuel Smiths Nut Brown Ale is one of the best in the world.

Here's my Mexican beer story, About 30 years ago we drove from San Diego to Cabo and took the ferry to Puerto Vallarta. We made it to Manzanillo before we turned around. We were surfin and windsurfin and spent about 6 weeks. Back then a wooden case of Mexican beer was 20 bottles which was odd because they also had 6packs. The deposit was $5 and the beer was $2. So after you paid your first deposit then you would trade in you case of empties got 20 more beers of any Mexican brand for 10 cents each. Although Corona was popular in the states at that time it wasn't in Mex. We drank Pacificos mainly. It's really hard to bitch about any 10 cent beer.
The ferry ride was pretty cool and lasted about 22 hours. Everything was really cheap and we got a cabin even though I had a big camper on my truck. The La Paz high school girls basketball team was on the ferry heading for a national championship tourney on the mainland and those girls thought we were it. Back then I was a very muscular beach boy and and took my shirt off because I could. Now, not so much. Anywho the flirting got to be a bit much so some of the girls parents complained and the First Mate told us to knock it off or he was going to confine us to quarters and that was the end of that. Nothing happened. I didn't even get a kiss. Ahhh memories.

So how much is Ozzie beer in Oz?

Re: Australia Day Beer Special

Around $40 a carton(24) for the common big brewery stuff. The others vary, but say $50-$65. Imported, anywhere from $40 to $90 depending on which is on special etc.

Re: Australia Day Beer Special

$40 a flat. I don't understand how Ozzies can afford to get pissed. Here's our local ad. The $20.99 and the $18.99 price is for 30 packs! Our microbrews are around $6 to $8 a six pack. BTW all our basic American beers such as Bud, Miller, and Coors are 5% alcohol. The light versions are around 4.5%. And Bud light is the most popular here. It sucks.

Re: Australia Day Beer Special

My info on the strength came from an American that I worked with. He claimed that it had to be under a certain strength otherwise it got called Malt liquor. Just like the internet I guess, don't believe everything.

Coops,

Come to South Aus and drink a Squires... Oh, hang on, they are made in NSW... So come to SA and try a Coopers. But avoid West End, it's plain water with colouring I suspect.

For the alcohol in just about any beer:

Realbeer.com: Beer Alcohol Content And Carbs In Beer

This one is more worldwide:
Find the Alcohol Content of Your Favorite Beer

And malt liquor is a confusing term for high strength brew. Some beers have more alcohol than malt liquors or vice versa.

Re: Australia Day Beer Special

I feel obliged to defend the international reputation of Australian beer and wine by pointing out that every time I have travelled overseas I have found the locals believe those horrible watery bottles of crap with big colourful Ken Done labels are representative of Australian tastes. Seriously, that stuff in Aus can be bought for 3$ a bottle and the only people who buy it are kids trying to pretend they are grow ups.

Tried it years ago, it is as described, but with less flavour.

Squires are excellent beers, especially the "strong ale" 8% and the '' Constable copper ale''

Coopers, again great beers, Just had some of their 62's, a Pilsener, at the weekend, very nice.

Funny you should say that. I was able to find good Australian wines at the northern end of Scotland for less than I have to pay for them here in Aus, and I live only twenty miles from the winery that produces them. All to do with the WIne Equalization Tax according to the wine maker.

Don't drink wine at all so cannot comment. It seems that most of the kids, and certain footballers, drink ''coolers". Alcoholic lolly water. Or to use a local term ''leg openers''.

Re: Australia Day Beer Special

The really old, old joke was that Queenslanders cannot spell beer.
