Auckland Harbour Points of Interest?

Off to Kiwiland in a couple of days and have planned a week's sailing in the Hauraki Gulf.

Our loop starts at Gulf Harbour Marina and ends there. Planning to visit (at a minimum) Kawau, Great Barrier, and Waiheke Islands. Also maybe a night anchored on the Coromandel.

Anyone have any suggestions for places that must be visited on those islands? Other islands that should be on the list? Specific anchorages?

You could drop by Rangitoto and walk to the summit. Stunning view from the top.

I gather that is so.... my wife has done it, as have the Auckland-based kids.

We climbed to the pa on Roberton Island in the Bay of Islands a few years ago; spectacular view of the Bay.

On a slightly different topic ... we are reluctant to pay Canadian roaming fees in NZ; is it possible to buy a phone with a month's worth of calls on it?

Most people travelling do pre pay plans, where you get so many calls and so much data on a month by month pre paid basis. Can pick them up very cheaply, often for less than the credit is worth that it comes with

Hi, Gt barrier island will be very busy at this time of year but I recommend spending your week there as if the wind is in the East you can easy spend a week in the West coast anchorages. Depends how much you like travelling I guess. Fitzroy is the most popular harbour on the barrier, bound to be some of yr countryman there too. Quite like Pt jackson at the top end of coromandel if you dont mind a little roll.

There are many great hikes at GBI, my favorite was to Cooper's Castle, by way of the kauri dams, a long hike. Wineries on Waiheke. The governor's mansion and arboretum on Kawau. You're going to have a great time.
