Re: At The Risk of Starting WWlll

I do know that no monos of comparable cruising comfort beat me to anchorages. But honestly the whole use of the terms "average Cruising Cat" and "average cruising mono" is a bit silly. Define average - if you mean latter lagoons, ok, if you mean earlier (TPI) Lagoons - not okay. Pescott Whitehavens are definitely cruising boats, and if you can find a mono of comparable price, with comparable amenity, quicker - then buy it.

It is true, longer the better, mono or multi, but longer in a mono means deeper, and that is a deal killer for many parts of the world. Certainly in mine, Draught more than 2.5 metres, forget getting into the largest marina complex in Australia for example without waiting for a good tide. Big lumps of the Queensland Coast become inaccessible. and not to mention air draught - over 20 meters - again forget cruising some of the prettier areas.

For the price of a Moody 54 for example, I can get a number of multis that draw less (air and water) are demonstrably quicker and can carry a genuine cruising load.

In rough weather the ride can be noisy.

You have to polish a cat?

No the key word is: constantly.

To read the utter garbage being posted here, mostly be people who've never set foot on a multihull, you'd assume that all the RTW record holders would have to be monohulls, since the multi's would flip the instant the sailor went below for a crap.

And yet capsizes are rare. In boats that are massively overpowered compared to any cruising boat.

And all the records are held by multihulls.

Fine by me. I'm sure the cap sizing argument is overstated. I have never set foot on a multihull, not opposed to doing so, but zero, absolutely zero interest in owning one. To me it is just a different form of sailing that does not appeal to me. Couldn't care less about the fact that they are quicker and more comfortable. To me they are ugly as sin, without exception (and without exaggeration), and I want to be proud of my boat. She needs to fit my personality, be an extension of who I am, what kind of sailing I do, and the places I want to go (and I accept some places are less, or not, accessible to me). As if that wasn't enough, berthing fees in Europe for a Cat are crippling. I'm happy for all happy cat owners, but don't try to convince me it should work for me. It doesn't, and never will. And that should be fine by cat owners. We just live in different worlds. Peace.

In my younger days, I was a pretty good bicyclist,
It's astonishing how close to the conventional bike vs recumbent argument this cat vs mono hull argument is.
For me Boatmans argument is what drives me, I think multi-hulls are cool, the way of the future maybe, but given X amount of money I can buy a better, nicer Mono hull than Multi.

Re: At The Risk of Starting WWlll

Mono's

Cats

Well. At the end of the day, sailors own, in the main, a SINGLE vessel because they like it. A person with a Beneteau will have diverse opinions with an owner of a Pearson.......

I dont like racing boats. I dont care if its a Cat or a Mono...... I dont like the effort required to keep it up to the mark. For the same reason I dont like racing cars.

I like automatic gearboxes as opposed to manual in a car.

I like R.V.s as compared to caravans.

I like Cats because I want space to live aboard and distance between me and anyone else if I have guests.
Overloading an issue on Cats? Dont overload.
Sailing into the wind a problem on some Cats? Turn on the engine.
Lots of hull noise in short seas? Suck it up and think of the peaceful marina berth when you get there.

You either like Cats or you dont.

There is no reason to compare "in general". A comparison can only be made between what you have and someone elses you either like or dont like.

I love 26 foot Westerly Centaurs. I would have either that or a 28 foot Cat for coastal running and occasional overnighting. However, I will live on the Cat for the space, the seakindly motion when moored and just because it suits me better.

I like sailing. Both breeds sail well. In the end, its down to personal preference. And as Boatie said........ how much cash you have to buy a sailer...If I cant afford a Cat.. I'd get a mono..and love it.

Re: At The Risk of Starting WWlll

Sailing is sailing.
The rest is preference.

I loved fishing in the 17 foot outboard cuddy boats we owned as kids in the North of England.... I loved the smallet sailing yachts I owned, I loved the huge sailing yachts richer friends owned. I loved the 40+ offshore motor fishing boats I had in Florida.... (but would I have liked it in another State?)

I really enjoy reading about how other people live on the vessels of their choice and circumstance. I take from it the bits that I can add to my knowledge and look and see what appeals to me or will be of use in the future. The type of vessel and shape will determine how some things will be done, and the adaptions to facilitate what is required, ie showers, galleys etc are quite ingenious......

In real life, circumstances and finances dictate our ability to live in a certain manner. If I were to go aboard someone of affluence' yacht, I would be shown hospitality and courtesy and treated to a refreshement or two and and enjoy excellent company and conversation.

If I were were to go aboard a vessel of a person with more constrained means, I would be shown hospitality and courtesy and treated to a refreshement or two and and enjoy excellent company and conversation.

In the end, anyone who lives on a boat has CHOSEN to do so. That merits a deep respect from us all.

You a straight shaver too? I am Slash McCoy on badgerandblade.com. I am not welcome on SRP because I don't parrot the site owners views. Anyway I have probly 15 lbs of straights lol. Right now my rotation consists of several of my GD66 conversions.

Well, I use an Edwin Jagger mono, far superior to those Gillette multi's!

No, that argument is not overstated. Your heads are much bigger than ours.
