Article on the History of Multihull Safety

I just saw this beautiful tri for sale HEDLEY NICHOL TRIMARAN boat details - BoatPoint Australia

On searching the make I found this article listing a lot of the old multi hull disasters and why they are perhaps still looked down on by many people.

Nobody denies that a lot of hulls make for more - 05.06.68 - SI Vault

I guess construction techniques have come a long way. Seems most of the disasters happened due to them falling apart.

Not all multihulls are created equal, and some of the earliest designs were built by amateurs who cut corners during construction and who also sailed their trimarans in a severely overloaded condition.

Modern multihulls are vastly different in construction from the older designs, and quality can vary substantially from one manufacturer to the next.

I wouldn't draw any conclusions about multihulls from stories about old designs or about racing designs.

I felt comfortable and safe sailing my catamaran around the world, but there are multihulls that I would not take on the same trip. I would have to look at each design and examine the construction to see if I would sail on it offshore.

I didn't post that article as a dig at multihulls. I just thought it was interesting. I like them and have done some ocean sailing on an old piver. My ultimate cruising boat is on of these. Not that I could ever afford it.

But I guess this particular one would probably fall apart going by its condition However it seems a lot of pivers have done well on ocean crossings. Even if Arthur Piver was ultimately killed on one.
