Thanks Ann,

I think you are all spot on. She is a heavy ship and I didn't even think about all of our gear and provisions. A becalming on a trip to Hawaii with all the weight and we could be bobbing around for days. Now if it's "tender" does that indicate she is more likely to be more likely to roll or have more motion? Thanks so much for all the feedback.

Wood mast not great. Looks like a seaworthy boat from the pics. Which doesnt mean much. Black iron is common and IMO is superior to aluminum and SS. Nothing corrodes faster in the bilge than SS or Alum. Many old Taiwan boats are black iron in the bilge and have lasted very well. However... ANY metal tank in the bilge is suspect after 5+ years. Some go bad real fast.

Yes, that's one implication of "tender". I once watched a similar shaped hull rolling literally rail to rail in moderate swell. In an anchorage with refracted swell, once they get going, they just roll and roll.

If there are any in your area, you might look at an H-28 that a tall guy built for himself. Those are competent small boats, some timber, some fiberglass. i don't remember if they are all ketches, but may find one sloop rigged.

Sorry, I gotta run, we're hauling the boat out for a bottom job this morning.

Interesting note, just saw the specs on a new Beneteau (forget which one) recently in a magazine only.....28% ballast ratio!

So how does a Westsail 32 compare SA/D with that boat...? one has to be real careful about numbers.....

My last boat was Cherubini 27. Really liked some things but really didn't like some things. They must have the shallowest bilges in a sailboat of that size. Mine was extremely forgiving tho which I loved.

Just to add to the displacement discussion: that displacement # may be the designed one, but it could be (could be, not IS) that it may not include all the wood that was built inside. Wood's klnda heavy...

The high displacement/ballast ratio, shallow draft, and heavy wood mast, combined, would tend to make this keep rolling long after the initial disturbance. That doesn't make it unseaworthy, just uncomfortable for most.

West-snail, some figures:

SA / D: 14.79 (Heavy Cruiser. 15 is tops)
D / L: 418.59 (Heavy)
B /D : 34% (average)
L /B : 2.5 (< 3 relatively beamy)
Motion Comfort: 39.97 (moderate but very close to quick (40+)!)
Capsize: 1.63 (good)
Roll Period: 4.5
Roll Accel: .37
